Ethics of CRISPR Gene Editing

on
Based on the information provided regarding biocybersecurity and CRISPR Gene editing, there seems to be a divide whether it is ethically acceptable or whether there should continue to be scrutiny on the methods they carry out this procedure. The module referring to Gene editing made me think about the positive capabilities this technology could have but also the ethical grey area that accompanies such a thing. I believe that the CRISPR equipment has the potential to be consistently life-changing but the use of embryos opens the door for criticisms. For starters, the technology has a flexible design, very cost effective, and can edit multiple genomes simultaneously; however, the possibility for unintended mutations exists and there isn’t enough data yet (case studies, publications, journal articles, etc) to support its all-around safety. They can manipulate genes for the purpose of solving diseases/birth defects and producing organisms that could be resistant to pollution or climate change which is admirable in nature. The problem that arises though is that some political parties and religious groups don’t support using embryos for the purpose of research because they believe consent is required for such a thing. The more that the CRISPR technology is utilized, there is speculation that it would cost extensively to achieve its usage, making the barrier between rich and poor or the have/have-nots even more noticeable. Also, Federal funds can’t be used in research that creates or destroys embryos so this technology is already under the microscope of the government. I believe that time will tell how far this technology goes and how much government funding/policy regulation will be attached to such a project but I still find it fascinating the positive opportunities this tech could allow, but with every advancement there will always be cautiousness and judgement of ethical considerations.
