11 Illegal Online Activites
Andrly Skynchuk posted 11 activities internet users do that are deemed illegal, ranging from modest harm all the way to a serious crime, or at least a predecessor for intention to commit a malicious violation. They are listed as unofficial streaming services, torrent services, using copyrighted images, bullying/trolling, sharing other people’s personal info (addresses, passwords, etc.), illegal services, recording calls without consent, faking identities, using other people’s internet/wifi, collecting info on underaged children, and extracting audio from Youtube. My assignment revolved around picking 5 that I deemed to be the most serious offenses so, in no particular order, they are bullying/trolling, sharing other’s info, faking identities, collecting children’s info, and illegal searches. Cyberbullying and trolling is continuing to be a constant problem due to technology being readily available to people of all ages and can lead to victims suffering emotional distress, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and loss of self-esteem. Sharing other peoples information without consent which can include passwords, addresses, etc., is simply a massive invasion of privacy and puts those individuals at risk of personal harm or identity theft. Faking identities is becoming more and more prevalent and is used as weapon to gain sensitive information to scam people, purposes of bullying/revenge, and stalking incidents. Collecting information of children under the age of 13 without parental consent is illegal under the Children’s Online Protection Act but it’s also illegal to lie about your age to access various content which should show the importance of parental supervision in the cyberworld. Lastly, illegal searches online can be provided to the authorities to try and prevent a future crime or to monitor suspicious activity. The amount of content on the internet is staggering but if searches are for negative things like child pornography, hiring criminals, etc. then it is rightfully under surveillance.
