Currently, I am spending my time volunteering at the Norfolk Zoo and working at a veterinary clinic. My educational studies are also being maintained. Next year, I will be applying to veterinary school.

Reflection 1

My seminar topic discusses the emotions of animals and their relation to survival. I was drawn to this topic because I am fortunate to work with animals on a day-to-day basis. Account of working with animals, I am able to observe their interactions with humans and other animals. Oftentimes, I am left wondering if these animals are able to feel in the same way as humans. This presentation allows me to decide whether or not animals experience emotions and if they do, determine why it would be beneficial to their survival rates.

Previously taken courses that have prepared me the most in writing my seminar project is Interpersonal Communications and Information Literacy and research. Both of these classes taught me how to effectively make and deliver a presentation. These past classes and experiences have adequately increased my proficiency in writing. I am confident that I will be able to develop a term paper and oral presentation.

Reflection 2

Research on animal emotions goes beyond reasons other than just curiosity. Evidence of animal feelings and emotions gives scientists insight into why animals make the decisions that they do for survival. This information is also beneficial for animals in captivity. If humans are able to determine what affects an animal’s emotional state then society would be able to create optimal living environments for nonhuman species. This is especially important for farms for raising quality livestock and zoos so that numbers of declining species may begin to replenish and thrive in captivity.

Recently, many articles have been made addressing the bigger picture of understanding the emotions nonhuman species experience. These articles go into depth on how to recognize these emotions through vocalizations, facial expressions, and body processes. One research article that will be addressed in my final presentation refers to the emotional states of farm animals in different conditions and how it relates to their quality of life.

Reflection 3

When researching my topic of animal emotions across the semester I was overwhelmed by the amount of new research that is being done on the topic. Animals are continuously showing emotions in ways that they originally thought impossible to do. It is truly shocking to research all the capabilities and intelligence that animals possess and this research opened my eyes to how emotional non-human species can be.

This course was a good refresher on writing scientific research papers. Since I had not written this type of paper in while, it was a great reminder of certain techniques used in order to write an informative paper. I discovered how beneficial it is to have a good outline before writing a paper and how having a well-organized paper leads to easier production of a visual presentation.

A short summary of what my presentation is about would be the effects of an animal’s emotion on how it survives. In further detail, it correlates emotions to an animal’s decision-making, reproduction, and social cohesion. The presentation also discusses the importance of how humans can better understand these emotions in order to aid in the conservation of these animals. From conducting this research I have learned the importance of humans understanding animals on an emotional level in order to better protect them.

Animal Emotions- Impact on Survival:

Biology-Seminar_-Final-PaperDownload

Raeghan’s Resume

Copy-of-Raeghan-Resume-1-2Download

I am a Biology major at Old Dominion University focusing on veterinary medicine.
