A Transformative Internship Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I reflect on the past few months of this semester, I feel immense gratitude toward everyone who contributed to making this journey such a meaningful and rewarding experience. I truly enjoyed every aspect of this internship course, as it allowed me to learn and grow both personally and professionally. Beyond this growth, I had the opportunity to build valuable connections with wonderful people, including my professor, TA\/GA, and fellow students. This unique experience has made such a positive impact on me, one that I will always remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This internship offered several positive outcomes, including engaging lectures from guest speakers, and opportunities to enhance both soft skills and technical skills. I thoroughly enjoyed every session, as each speaker shared valuable insights that ultimately helped me perform more effectively when working with clients and collaborating with my team. Reflecting on the experience, I now realize that the in-class activities were thoughtfully designed to prepare and equip us for a more positive and successful internship experience. Unlike other internships that may require students to begin work immediately without this kind of preparation, this program provided meaningful training beforehand. This made the experience truly unique and especially valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have personally learned a lot from this experience. Through Dr. During Baaki’s sessions, I learned how to practice empathy, which I think significantly enhanced my ability to work effectively with my team and the client. In addition, I further developed my technical skills by learning how to use Tenable, a vulnerability management tool, and by gaining experience in creating detailed technical reports. Furthermore, I have conquered my fear of public speaking. As a non-native English speaker with an introverted personality, public speaking is always a big challenge for me. However, this experience helped me grow and be better at public speaking. I noticed a clear improvement in my confidence between my first dry-run presentation and the final team executive reflection presentation, during which I felt far less nervous. Overall, this experience taught me that stepping outside of my comfort zone is essential for personal growth and continuous improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something that did not go as expected was meetings with my team more frequently. This was primarily due to our different schedules, as we all had other classes, jobs, and other commitments. Additionally, location also played a role; some team members lived on campus, while others, including myself, lived off campus. As a result, even when we wanted to meet, coordinating frequent in-person meetings was often difficult. To address this challenge, something that we could have done differently was, establishing specific and consistent meeting times at the beginning of the project, at least once a week. If in-person meetings were not possible, we could have met online, and if weekdays were challenging, weekends could have been an alternative. Setting up regular weekly meetings would likely have helped us collaborate more effectively and practice more thoroughly for the final presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For future interns, my team and I developed several valuable recommendations: strive to learn as much as possible, take thorough notes and be well prepared, actively participate and take initiative, and most importantly, practice as much as you can. These recommendations are interconnected; for example, taking notes helps to prepare more effectively, which also enables active participation and taking initiative. And of course, practice as much as possible for both the dry run and the final presentation, as they say “Practice makes men perfect\u201d. This ultimately enhances learning in a positive and meaningful way. Thus, we believe that following these recommendations will help future interns make the most of this internship experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lastly, my only recommendation for this course would be to include more dry-run presentations if possible. These practice sessions are valuable for the final presentation, as they provide constructive feedback; and, more feedback means more improvements. Additionally, I would strongly recommend retaining all the guest speaker sessions, and, if possible, increasing the number of Dr. Baaki\u2019s sessions, as they offer valuable insights and guidance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, this internship experience has been both meaningful and transformative. It provided valuable learning opportunities, practical training, and personal growth that extended beyond technical skills. The main takeaway for me is undoubtedly, the practice of empathy. Putting myself in another person\u2019s shoes allowed me to appreciate different perspectives, which greatly contributed to positive interactions when working with people of diverse personalities. Additionally, this experience taught me the importance of time management. Despite challenges, I learned how to manage my time with practice and how to work in a team and independently. Most importantly, by stepping outside of my comfort zone, I gained greater confidence and improved communication skills. Overall, this internship has left a long lasting, positive impression that I will carry forward throughout my academic and professional journey at ODU and beyond.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
