I learned what influences behavior of those around me and was provided with great life examples that led me to have a greater understanding of concepts throughout the course. As for the course objects, I believe I achieved them. I am now able to make better connections due to my knowledge of attitudes and behavior. I am also able to apply what I have learned this semester to personal outside experiences in an attempt to understand others around me and their influences when making relationships in life. Overall, this objectives aided me in bettering my understanding of social problems. My attitude is still positive regarding social psychology and I would keep the same strategies for success that I maintain now. If I took this class again, I would not overthink my work as much, making it easier to submit assignments without anxiety. This class has allowed me to strengthen and grow my studying techniques. One skill I gained from this course that I can utilize later in professional life is the ability to write quickly. I included the image below that I drew because it represents how I grew academically this semester. I slowly learned and pieced concepts together resulting in success.

Blog 9:

I have learned many things so far in this course, but three things have been especially enlightening. The first top thing I have learned so far was how powerful and important prosocial behavior is. This topic is related to module eleven archive. The second top thing I have learned revolves around the concept of love. I learned about love’s meaning, emergence, and effects. This topic is related to module nine archive. Third, I learned how group membership affects perceptions of social outcomes. This topic is related to module six archive. I discussed the concept of prosocial behavior in assignment five and afterwards I applied what I learned to blog post seven. Thanks for concepts discussed in assignment five I had gained a better understanding of connection between self-regulation and prosocial behavior. Assignment five concepts can be helpful when applied to blog seven because it shows that in part prosocial behavior depends on the ability to control behavior, or so-called self-regulation. Finally, this course taught me about stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. More specifically, this course taught me various strategies that have been used to successfully change stereotypes and reduce prejudice. This information is related to concepts of school reform I learned in my Psychology of Adolescence course. The strategies to reduce prejudice relate to the ways I learned our schools have reformed in order to reduce bullying and increase inclusivity. I included the image I drew below because it best represents my process of boiling down what I learned this semester.

Blog 8:

After reading the mating article I realized that human mating is affected by several sexual conflicts over time. I think men upset women by not holding themselves to the same standards they hold others to, by being unfaithful, and by ignoring emotional problems and not bothering to communicate. I think women upset men by not giving them their wanted amount of space, by not saying what they mean, by having changes in mood, and by laughing at them. It is our ability to organize or regulate ourselves without the intervention or help from others for positive social interactions and learning. Emotional intelligence refers to our ability to try and get a better understanding of what our emotions are and how they affect others, especially our relationship with them. Then we can choose how we respond best. Essentially, it is the ability to be self-aware, exert self-regulation, and have the motivation to control emotions to avoid knee jerk negative emotional responses that we will regret. Overall, emotional intelligence means a person can communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict.

Personally, for me, emotional intelligence is the ability to find balance in controlling emotions I display in order to communicate effectively and how well I read others emotions. It means my ability to handle conflict judiciously and empathetically. An example of how I display emotional intelligence is being aware of and responding to my friends’ emotional states. This is an example of emotional intelligence because it shows I have compassion as well as an understanding of others’ emotions and the intelligence to act accordingly. A way to improve emotional intelligence is to utilize active listening skills, practice regular self-evaluations and respond instead of reacting to conflict. Prior to this presentation, I did not realize how many ways advertisements can normalize dangerous attitudes towards women, and create a climate in which women are reduced to sex objects. This presentation contributed to a new understanding of differential gender representation for me. Women are reduced to dismembered body parts, insulted with impossible standards and grown women are infantilized. They are often forced to be passive, vulnerable, and submissive in their body language. Kilbourne also helped me understand that just because men claim advertisements are doing the same to them as they have always done to women does not mean that is true. It is true that men experience harmful stereotypes, but I learned that they tend to be less personal and less related to the body. Kilbourne explained that though they are starting to be objectified more today, the consequences are non-existent because they do not live in a world where they are likely to be raped, harassed, or beaten.

The first advertisement titled Picture A supports Kilbourne’s claims because it depicts a woman being treated as a thing trapped by four men. This is relevant to Kilbourne’s presentation because she discussed how reducing women to objects in the media promotes violence against them.

The second advertisement titled Picture B supports the claims made in the video because it depicts a woman feeding her baby a bottle behind the caption “because her boobs are for you, not your baby, milk helps you take back what’s yours”. This advertisement is relevant to the presentation because it objectifies women and influences, young girls, by telling them their body parts are not their own.

The third advertisement or Picture C depicts how advertisements infantilize grown women to sell a product. The image depicts a woman dressed in white holding a teddy bear behind the caption “love’s baby soft because innocence is sexier than you think”. This supports the claim that advertisements affect how men feel about the very real women in their lives, cause them to look at girls as sex objects, and normalize dangerous attitudes towards children.

The fourth advertisement or Picture D depicts how impossible the image is for women of color. It depicts a woman of color next to a product that lightens skin. The caption below her describes light skin as being fresher, sparkling, head-turning, and a brighter beauty. This is relevant to the presentation because Kilbourn discussed how women of color are considered beautiful only insofar as they resemble the white ideal.

The fifth advertisement or Picture E compares a pear to a women’s body. This is relevant to the presentation because young girls are being told they have to look thin, hot, and sexy and that they will fail at this if they do not match the impossible ideal. It supports the claim in the video that there is a terrible emphasis on physical perfection in adolescence.

Blog 5:

Picture A represents a credible source because the source of the message that customers will read is deemed highly credible by Dr. Alexander-Smith. Factors that influenced the advertisement’s perceived credibility were the doctor’s trustworthiness and expertise.

Picture B represents a non-credible source because it does not state that the man is a real doctor and does not cite the surveys that supposedly claim doctors smoke camels the most. I believe by reviewing I gained confidence in myself because I realized what mistake I had made. My exam one preparation strategy was to augment my notes as I slowly read through each assigned chapter each week. Having my notes with me as I read the textbook searching for answers to the learning objectives and vocabulary made my life easier. It allowed me to quickly compare items, write down questions, and highlight any explanations I think will be important. I also completed the review sheet bit by bit the week before the test and reviewed it heavily the night before. From personal experience I have found that music can form great relationships. I have noticed that when sharing the same music preferences as others, there is often a bonding moment because types of music are associated with specific values and ideals. I have always thought that music was a deeper look into the person’s soul or essence. Over time I have noticed a similarity in music preference between myself and my friends. My best friend and I have had an eerily similar taste in music ever since we first met years ago. After learning her favorite songs and artists I realized we wanted the same things in life. Those songs we loved expressed our ideal circumstances and our core values. Loving the same songs meant we had the same wishes and same values. One only has to analyze our music playlists to learn about our ideals and values.

The soundtrack I complied represents myself, my significant other, my parents, my siblings, my friends, and my outlook on life. I associate these particular songs with those key people because I think of them when I hear them on the radio. The songs I chose for my family members represented what we have been through and how strongly we value each other. I associate my significant other with a certain song by Bruno Mars because we have an inside joke about it. I chose a famous song from the movie Toy Story to represent my best friend because it reminds me of how we always stick together. Included below is a representative photograph of the list of people and their accompanying songs that I associate with them. I drew the picture below because I thought it demonstrated how music is a way to share the love you have for the world and others.

Blog 2:

After spending time to reflect, I have decided that the type of student I am is best described as scholarly. I believe I am this kind of student because I like to be organized and practice good study habits as much as I can. I consider myself a high achiever with a high motivation to learn and truly understand the content. I am the kind of student that is not afraid to ask questions in search of new knowledge, ideas, findings, and such for further growth. I am confident in my abilities as a student because I have spent years establishing self-discipline as well as a growth mindset.

One factor that could increase my level of confidence as a student is to better prepare myself for unexpected events. If I am able to remain unshaken when facing uncertainty and not become overwhelmed, I would be more confident in my abilities to efficiently adapt to difficult situations. Another factor that would increase my confidence as a student is to build resilience. When facing difficulties and setbacks, I become discouraged and might even lose all motivation. This would increase my confidence in my learning abilities because practicing how to positively cope with failure empowers me to be self-reflective and strive to do better.

My self-efficacy results demonstrate how strong my belief is in my academic abilities to effectively perform in order to reach my valued goals. After completing the general self-efficacy scale, or GSE, I was able to calculate my total score by finding the sum and determine that my results added up to a score of thirty. The highest number a person can get on the general self-efficacy scale is a score of forty. In other words, a higher score indicates more self-efficacy. My score of thirty represents how strongly I believe I can use my abilities to work towards my goals. My somewhat high sense of self-efficacy has had a direct effect on my life that can be shown through my academic achievements. My confidence in my abilities has led me to accomplish my seemingly impossible goal of receiving a 4.0.
