In this course, we analyzed literary works starting from the Middle Ages all the way up to the twentieth century. By reading genres such as poetry, plays, and narrative essays, we learned how these works play an important role in expressing Hispanic and Latin American identities and experiences

One of the main takeaways from this class is how literary expression can be a powerful tool for activism. From the feminist ideals laid out in the poems of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz to the real life accounts of the Spanish colonization of the Americas, each work tells a different story about the meaning of being Hispanic.

This class has helped me think critically about Hispanic and Latin American literature and understand its importance in the history of Spain and Latin America. The next pages display my progress in my Spanish-writing and critical-thinking skills throughout the semester.

Debate #1: La In his account of the treatment of indigenous populations, Díaz del Castillo justified the inquisition on religious grounds, stating that it is their duty to spread Christianity to the New World. However, the indigenous populations endured harsh punishments and unfair treatments, which were not accounted for in Díaz del Castillo’s manuscripts.

In the second artifact, I chose to depict José Hernández’s Martín Fierro, who was a gaucho in Argentina during the late 19th century.
