How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?

With the arrival of the internet, crimes evolved and increased exponentially, and so is the way these crimes are prosecuted. Offenders have broadened their reach thanks to the platforms of social media and messaging apps, they can communicate with people around the world without physically knowing this person “victim.” In this modern world, Technology has forces to use these platforms as a way not to stay behind in the market or relationship communication and by putting ourselves open on the internet, our profiles revel an extensive portion of our personal information like age, where we are from and even pictures posted can provide a lot of information. Offenders take advantage of these and use it to cyberbully. Moreover, Cyber technology allows the offenders to be completely anonymous or using third parties making it easier to commit the offences as they would not be afraid to be detected. In the other side, victims use cyber technology by reporting these crimes. First, platforms have brought with the passage of time new tools of reporting and malicious user and block. Secondly, platforms and messaging apps have evolved and allow personalization of your social media like “only friends” can see their profile. Lastly, if the offence is more personal and in depth as sexual or death threats, the criminal justice system has been updating their legislations to deal with these new modalities of crime. Victims can screen shot, save emails and conversations to use as probe for the law and help prosecute the offenders. Lastly, the law is trying to do their best to address the victim’s cases, but cyber stalker and cyber harassers are becoming also smart reading the laws, and offenders can get away easily due to the lack of physical contact and phrase interpretation as “relationships” or close relative or consent given.
