I discuss my experiences in high school and college, especially how basketball shaped my discipline, leadership, and mindset. I also explain how I became interested in computers and why I chose cybersecurity as my major. My story connects to ideas from McAdams (2001), Nguyen (2015), and Smith (2016), who explain how identity develops through experiences, challenges, and personal growth. These ideas help show how my past decisions and experiences influenced my future goals. Overall, my journey shows that growth takes time, and trying new things can help shape a person’s identity and career path.

My Journey to Cybersecurity

My History

My name is Rieco Hellams, and I attended Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland. This is where I first became interested in computers and technology. At the time, I did not know it would become my future career, but it sparked my curiosity. I also played basketball, which has always been an important part of my life.

In high school, I worked hard in both academics and athletics. I was honored to be named captain of my basketball team, where I learned leadership and responsibility. I also received the Best Student-Athlete/Leader Award. Basketball taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to stay focused during difficult times. These skills helped me succeed both in school and on the court.

How I Became Interested in Cybersecurity

After high school, I attended Randolph-Macon College, where I was introduced to computer science. At first, I was unsure about my career path, but my interest grew after taking my first class. Cybersecurity stood out to me the most. Cybersecurity involves protecting systems, networks, and data from threats, almost like guarding important information.

I enjoy cybersecurity because it feels like solving puzzles. You have to think critically and find solutions to problems. I especially like learning about networks and how information travels between systems. Understanding how hackers think also helps prevent attacks. This makes cybersecurity both challenging and interesting.

My Life at Old Dominion University

At Old Dominion University, I continue to study cybersecurity while playing basketball. Being a student-athlete is challenging because I must balance schoolwork, practices, and games. However, this experience has helped me improve my time management skills.

Although basketball takes up a lot of time, I continue to build my knowledge in cybersecurity. I recently completed an Amazon AWS course, where I learned about cloud computing and how data is stored and protected online. This experience showed me how cybersecurity works in real-world situations. I plan to gain more hands-on experience through internships in the future.

My Story Identity

According to McAdams (2001), people form their identity by creating stories about their life experiences. This idea relates to my journey because my experiences in basketball and cybersecurity have shaped who I am today.

Nguyen (2015) explains that people grow by learning from mistakes and trying new things. This connects to my experience because I did not always know what I wanted to do. By trying computer science, I discovered my interest in cybersecurity.

Smith (2016) also states that challenges and decisions help shape identity. Being a student-athlete requires discipline and strong decision-making. Balancing school and sports has helped me become more responsible and focused on my goals.

Future Goal

Looking ahead, I feel confident about my future in cybersecurity. I know I still have a lot to learn, but I am motivated to continue improving my skills. My goal is to work in cybersecurity, protecting systems and helping people stay safe online.

I also plan to earn certifications like AWS and Security+ to strengthen my career opportunities. The skills I developed through basketball, such as teamwork, discipline, and problem-solving, will continue to help me succeed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my journey has been shaped by both basketball and my interest in cybersecurity. My experiences have helped me grow and discover my career path. The ideas from McAdams (2001), Nguyen (2015), and Smith (2016) explain how my identity developed through my experiences.

My story shows that growth takes time and effort. By staying open to new experiences and continuing to work hard, I believe I can achieve my goals and build a successful career in cybersecurity.

References

McAdams, D.
