I enjoyed learning about how they bargain (regatear). I also enjoyed seeing the vibrant scenes where life happens.

Watching this video shows the beauty of the outdoor market. Seeing that different items are sold at different stalls for different prices and always asking for a discount is important shows the cultural values in countries that have a central market! (specifically Costa Rica) I like the idea that the store doesn’t just have one price you have to be willing to bargain and ask for what is fair. This allows your value judgment to hold weight in a monetary form.

Engaging in Communities

It is important to engage with many different communities than simply the original culture to which you were exposed.. Learning about cultures will broaden your understanding and empathy of people around you as well as making you a better communicator. My current job as a swim instructor has had me engage with a few people who speak Spanish, and one of my instructee’s parents told me to learn Spanish through music and children’s television shows. I have included a song below.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Enrique Iglesias - Bailando ft. Communities around you can include online communities as well. Especially during the pandemic, engaging in person has become more difficult. Listening to the song and translating it to English and relistening until I can pick up the different meanings helped me understand more of the rhythm of how Spanish works and how different ideas can be expressed in Spanish has helped me. Learning how different ideas can be expressed because of the differences in sentence structure is especially important to me because I am a writer and I need to understand those different things.

Interpersonal Communication

The Talk Abroad I had was with a lady named Sandra Mancheno from Ecuador. She was a professor and she was very helpful and kind. I also enjoy talking to some online friends in Spanish as this helps me to expand my knowledge and understanding of how Spanish works.

With every time I speak to someone in Spanish I learn something from the exchange. Whether its nuances of pronunciation or how to say certain things and make the words fit together better or more appropriately, I gain more knowledge from every interaction that I have with someone in Spanish. This gives me hope that I will continue to expand my knowledge of Spanish and be able to write more poetry and stories in Spanish.

Presentational Speaking

Here I present a short poem that I wrote in Spanish.

This presentation is of a poem that I wrote. I had to do a lot to figure out how to get the video in this space. Also saying one of my poems aloud makes me very nervous especially because it is in Spanish. Talking out loud does not scare me much but it is more difficult in Spanish because I worry that I will say things incorrectly. I am working on my pronunciation as well as word selection and organization by writing and reciting Spanish poetry.

Presentational Writing

This activity was about a daily routine somewhere different than normal. This helped me think outside of the regular daily routines and work on something that was not in the normal routines.

Spanish-Paragraph-Daily-Routine-on-the-Sea-Vera-Guerrero-Elena-V.-Vera-Guerrero-Elena-V.

Initially I was unsure of what to do or what to write about, but I settled on a daily routine on a boat in the sea. It was not easy to write about at first but when I sent my corrections to my professor she was helpful. When I do another activity like this I will work on making sure my words mesh together a little better.

Interpretive Listening

During some homework assignments we had to listen to conversations in Spanish and interpret what they were about related to specific pieces of learning such as is this in preterite or present tense.

https://m3a.vhlcentral.com/sections/1033178/activities/132325

This was difficult at first, but as I learned and remembered different conjugations and word endings it became easier to know what was in preterite or present tense. Also when listening to other sections in context determining preterite or present tense became easier as well. Studying and focused learning will help to distinguish these tenses. I really like when a concept finally sticks with you and then it is easy and becomes second nature.

Interpretive Reading

On my Duolingo app, there are many stories that I have read to help me understand words. They give me good examples and go at a pace I can handle as well as showing words when I do not know what they mean.

https://youtu.be/AlhRAuIlARE

This app is very helpful in understanding different words and helping the readers gain context for words. This allows you to practice over and over again and puts words into stories and gives different lessons for the users to complete. Duolingo will be the app that I continue to use to help me brush up on my Spanish skills and increase my learning of the subject.

Exploring Culture The outdoor market in the Flash Cultura video was very interesting.
