Feminism studies the oppression of women and how it’s being either shown or hidden away in literature. They first start off by looking into patriarchy, the belief that women are excluded and that social systems are mostly run by males. They also look at the false binaries of not just women’s behavior in comparison to men but also to the way women can be seen as a whole. When comparing male and female behavior, men are usually viewed as strong and intelligent leaders, a contrast to the way women are viewed, weak and emotionally submissive. When discussing the different types of women they’re mostly seen as either pure or impure. These binaries can usually end up putting women against each other. Feminist look at the works of other women and analyzing their worth by determining how other forms of oppression interact with gender in the story, whether or not women turn against each other, as they sometimes do in issues of patriarchy and how good the story is at concealing and/or revealing this oppression women go through. Using the means of the Bechdel Test can help do this by investigating how many women there are in story, do they talk with each other and do any of their conversations not deal with a man. Feminist Theory is a great way to determine the authors gender views via looking for female oppression.
Kate Miller is a theorist well known for feminism, despite also symbolizing a somewhat Marxist like idea to it. She believes our sexual identity, the one we are born with genetically is biological, while the definitions of men and women or male or female are social and determined by how we’re raised and taught in society. She also believed that there are also many peices in a story that can reveal the opposite of male dominion over female.
