Postcolonialism

Postcolonialism is the breaking down of a story with the purpose of exposing the division of east and west in a story. It is inspired by actual colonialism, the eastern or European discovery and claiming of the western part of the world. Doing so allows them to attempt to colonize the people of this world, to make them follow their ideals and beliefs for the think it’ll change their lives for the better, turning what they believe to be the savage behavior of the west to their more civilized behavior. However Postcolonialism tries to show that east, west, civilized and savage are all constructs created by society as people have their own interpretation of what is considered civilized and savage. Many Postcolonial theorists look at the traditions and religion of characters in a story as well as how they define themselves as people. Do they merge parts of the opposite culture into their traditions and lifestyle and do they have an idea of whether they’re civilized or savage. If they do borrow from the opposing culture, do they have a limit on how much they take? Are they limited by colonialism from the opposing culture’s dominion. Those are all questions thought on by Postcolonial Theorist.

A theorist whose expertise lies in Postcolonial Theory is Edward Said who believed postcolonialism comes from orientalism, a belief in Europe as the more powerful and successful east and as such that they could colonize the west and make it more civilized. Gayatri Spivak is also a theorist of this study, who believed postcolonialist look for signs of European dominion over the west while at the same time showing signs of reclaiming peices of what was lost despite cultural trauma, which enables a character or group to fully go back to the way they were before colonization.
