Motivation Scale

Entertainment
Tom Liner said he did it for fun and money. I rate this a 5. It is somewhere in the middle for me because greed is dangerous. However, he did not need this money. He just wanted to have a laugh and make a little money as well.

Political
I rate this a 4 because it had more of a meaning. These kids wanted to send a message but it was the wrong way to send the message. Leaking sensitive information to the public without the consent of others is a crime.

Revenge
I rate this a 7. There is no reason to put such a personal and even disgusting thing on the internet for entertainment. It is wrong to put embarrassing sensitive images of people out into the public and it crosses an entirely different line when it involves explicit videos and images of children.

Boredom
I would rate cyberbullying and online grooming a 7. Cyberbullying is a large contributor to suicide and also translates to bullying in real life. Bullying can create school threats and lead to the unnecessary loss of lives for children. Online grooming is made easy for predators. Children are naive and predators can pretend to be anyone. There is genuinely no good reason or motive for either of these, especially taking advantage of children.

Recognition
This attack was meaningless. I will rate this a 6 since it wasn’t outright harmful but did cause significant damage to a political campaign. Niblock did also send some threatening messages to a woman but this is while he was under investigation for the previous attack.

For Money
I will rate this a 5 because the reasons are selfish. In the article it says only 15% spend their money on bills and family needs. The other percentages are for personal gain and even hurt the spender when purchasing things like drugs.

Multiple reasons

When it comes to exposing criminals through technology I would count that as a good motive and rate it a 1 on the scale. If it is only for personal gain it gets higher on the scale and it makes me think of how selfish people can be.
