Aspects of the encounters to consider were what events lead to the deed, what type of deed was it, who was it for, how did they react, what were my final thoughts, etc. Therefore, over the course of a single week, I helped, or did five good deeds for people and they taught me a lot about human nature. For example, I found that just helping someone out was not the only part of my motivation for taking action. Surprisingly, not appearing to be rude or unlikeable, even to a complete stranger helped to motivate my decision to enact a good deed on that person. And another example in which I discovered how different human nature can be between people, was when one person who I did a good deed for was actually insulted by it! I reached for a bag of frozen peas the person couldn’t do on their own and they were not happy that I noticed and helped. I suppose it is wrong to generalize about what reaction a person will have towards a given action, but I have to say that I was quite surprised by this.

Applying this to something else I’ve learned this semester; I like to think of the concept of “the self”. Even if it may not seem like it all the time, everyone is a unique individual with opinions and ideas of their own which set them apart from everybody else. We tend to group people or make assumptions about them based on what we know from past observations through the use of simple heuristics. But how this applies to the self is that my journey of good deeds through this past week demonstrated how each of us can perceive the world in different ways even if we are reacting to the same stimulus. For example, the good deed of reaching a shelf for a bag of frozen peas offended the person I did off. However, when I did again for someone else, they were very grateful and pleased with action. Therefore, we all have different ways of interpreting each other and our own sense of self is what allows us to first recognize that these differences do indeed exist.

Of personal relevance to myself, I think I need to be more narrowly focused on just helping someone rather what secondary goals could be achieved along side the deed. As displayed by the example of not wanting to appear rude, or perhaps even unattractive to a complete stranger caused me to act more than simply wanting to help out a fellow human being did. As such, the image I selected to accompany this last assignment takeaway is actually a quote from the Greek playwright Sophocles. It reads “To be doing good deeds is Man’s most glorious task”. To me this illustrates perfectly what I need improve upon in myself which is recognizing that the deed itself and the willingness to show kindness upon another is what truly counts and to think of anything else as a means of motivation, in most cases, is just selfish.

https://quotesgram.com/good-deeds-quotes/

ATA4 – 03/17/22

Assignment 4 required that I complete and score the Styles of Love Questionnaire and then discuss my reactions to how my average scores compare with those of other examples from males in the study. Upon completing the questionnaire, I discussed whether or not I felt that my scores accurately reflected my role as a romantic partner, (specifically as a male) and I drew from past experience to infer what I do well as a lover and what I need to potentially work on. For example, within the pragma category, I scored high which means I am low for that kind of love. As such, I realized that going into future relationships, I need to be more rational and adopt a mindset where I basically know all the facts before rushing something without the proper planning. They say love is blind but that doesn’t hold up in the real world.

I believe completing this assignment has helped to identify my strongpoints and weaknesses I take into relationships and based on what has worked, or hasn’t worked in the past I see where I can improve. Overall, I think my results did very well to reflect the styles of love I gravitate towards and I appreciate that this made assignment made sit down and do this because I know I wouldn’t have otherwise. I never thought about love having different styles so I’m glad I’m no longer ignorant of this important fact.

While it may be obvious, how I intend to apply what I learned here to something else is going to be the incorporation of these styles into real relationships. I’ll probably even refer back to my results from time to time to make sure I’m headed in the right direction and keep track of how I might need to change or make adjustments based on what kind of relationship I’m currently involved in. And the questionnaire itself is a useful tool to figuring how people can change in their views and commitments over time.

For my relevant visual image, my reason for choosing it is straightforward: it gives a nice description of each style of love. Having this really helped me while doing the assignment by putting them all into context while I took the questionnaire and then wrote about it. Having a broader view of what each category represents helped me to reach a more accurate score(s) at the end.

http://fourteeneastmag.com/index.php/2020/06/01/love-is-wilderness/.=t

ATA2 – 02/13/22

For assignment 2, I was asked to gather a collection of photographs which do best to represent my self-concept. I kept it relatively simple using 6 photographs each one representing key aspects of my personality. These are my ambition, my independent nature, my stubbornness, my sense of responsibility, my willingness to help others and my wild side. From doing this assignment I learned to better analyze people based on photographs and how even a small detail can tell so much about a person.

Another thing I learned from this assignment is how one event can play such a large and lasting role in our life. For example, and of personal relevance, one of the photo I included was of me at 6 years old in the ODU dental clinic where I made my choice to become a dentist myself. I Asked the hygienist working in my mouth how she felt about her job and what she did to get there. And then in simple terms, she explained how she got there, what she had to do and how much she loved her job which rubbed off on me and made want to follow the same path. However, I aimed to be a dentist rather than a hygienist, but the thought came from her nonetheless. In the picture, I am sitting in the dentist chair excited just after hearing the hygienist’s story about her career. I know this one moment in time is where I decided what I wanted to be and why. This picture represents to me my self-concept as a future dentist which I have always imagined myself as being since that day. It is amazing to look back on a single event and realize the rest of my life started that day.

Applying the work done here to something else, I would have to cite an exploration into the question of “who am I”. It can be divided into the actual self which is how we perceive ourselves, a social self which is how other people view us, an expected self which is how we view ourselves in a future context, an ideal social self which is how we would like others to view us and the ideal self which is what we want ourselves to be. The photos I picked represented several versions of my “self” in many different environments and situations. This really made me think just how a simple question like “who am I” is not actually simple at all.

For a relevant visual image, I decided to use a picture of the ODU dental clinic where I decided to pursue my dream career. I could not think of a better image to include as I know I made a very important choice there.

https://usaadmission.com/best-physical-therapy-school

ATA1 – 01/30/22

Social Psychology Assignment 1 involved writing about the use of heuristics and understanding how information is perceived and then employed. Heuristics provide techniques which be used for making complex decisions or drawing up short-term approximations in a rapid and efficient manner. For this assignment, as listed in the textbook, there were four heuristics of interest: the representativeness heuristic, availability heuristic, anchoring and adjustment heuristic and the status quo heuristic.

I learned that the representativeness heuristic is used when trying to estimate the possibilities in a given event usually based on established knowledge regarding people and places. I discovered that most biases are rooted in this heuristic because judgments are made based on aspects such as appearance and skin color rather than by first getting to know the person. It is amazing how quickly judgments are made based on what we already know rather than what we will know.

Additionally, besides the availability and status quo heuristics, on a personal level, I found particularly interesting and learned about the anchoring and adjustment heuristic. As was my example in the assignment, buying and selling on eBay used to be something of a hobby to me and I understood quite well using a reference point (the anchor) and then adjusting it to ultimately reach a decision but I never had a name to put it with. I used the anchoring and adjustment heuristic many times when negotiating prices both on what I sold and bought. Setting the starting bid ridiculously high almost always ensured that the majority of the bids would be close to said starting bid. People will believe they got a good bargain just because it was lower than the initial price even if it is not by much.

Relating heuristics to another class, I picked the availability heuristic as an example. Last year I took calculus and before enrolling, I based my opinions about it on what the general idea of what math is rather than really thinking about it logically. Prioritizing infrequent events based on easily accessible information and vividness, I thought about how a few other students had little success in the same class and I was expecting the same. This, however, did not happen and according to the teacher, the class success rate was actually quite high being around 90% of passing students. Here I made a judgment about calculus based on what was easily recalled, other students’ low success, rather than forming my own opinion because I was convinced that I would fail as well.

The representative visual image I chose for this assignment is a picture of the website which I used to use a lot many years ago, eBay. I liked to collect vintage Hot Wheel toys when I was younger, given how much I loved race cars and the like. It always brought back nice memories of the excitement I felt when I opened a new package, a feeling I still never get tired of.

https://www.dreamstime.com/photos-images/ebay.html

ATA5 – 04/07/22 Assignment 5 involved me taking an active role in my community to do five good deeds for complete strangers.
