Answer: With Cyber Security, there are multiple ways to approach the field. Many have dubbed cyber security “interdisciplinary”, meaning that it involves more than one distinct discipline. There are four examples of majors at ODU that reinforce this interdisciplinary nature. The first example would be Criminal Justice. Cyber crime has been on the rise recently, with there being more and more necessity for detectives to be able to effectively navigate and solve crimes online. In my own life, I have friends who work on cyber divisions in the police force, having been tasked with solving online child abuse and spreading awareness about child safety online. Another major that ties in with cyber security would be computer science. Personally, I find this to be the most obvious, with cyber security and computer science both having a great emphasis on computers. Much of the skills needed in cyber security, such as understanding Linux, configuring firewalls, and coding, translate directly into many computer science programs.  Another major that relates to cyber security would be Public Law. Cyber security and cyber law are a relatively new fields, with entirely new techniques and technologies. In recent years, an effort has been made to bolster and standardize cyber policies and legal practices in cyber space. This standardization requires an understanding of cyber security for lawyers, as well as an understanding of federal, state, and local laws for cyber security agents.  A fourth major that ties into cyber security would be business. With the digital age, most store purchases, movie rentals, bank transactions, and academic work is done online. Businesses now contend with physical attacks on their businesses as well as online scams and data breaches. Companies have now hired cyber security agents solely for protecting their data, as well as making the rest of their company aware of cyber threats. With this increased threat, there has also been an opportunity. Entrepreneurial businesses have filled the roles of protecting cyber infrastructure, be it a bank, academic institution, or another business. As cyber space becomes more and more necessary for daily commerce, businesses will need a heightened sense of their own cyber security practices. Though I have provided only four majors that relate with cyber security, there are numerous majors that dabble in cyber security in the digital age.
