COVA CCI is the Coastal Virginia Center for Cyber Innovation. It runs an internship program for juniors and seniors studying cybersecurity. It motivates aspiring cybersecurity professionals to experience real-world situations and help aid local businesses with free risk analysis. This program emphasizes practical experience through collaborative projects, mentorship, and immersion in advanced cybersecurity practices. During my internship, I collaborated with a dynamic team to deliver cybersecurity consulting services to a non-profit volunteer organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our project focused on identifying and addressing cybersecurity risks for the company while ensuring alignment with industry standards and data protection regulations. Utilizing the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, we evaluated the organization\u2019s current security measures, identified vulnerabilities, and recommended practical solutions to mitigate critical threats such as phishing, malware, and ransomware attacks. Furthermore, we explored tools like the Google Titan Security Key to enhance the organization’s access authorization processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project provided me with valuable insights into real-world cybersecurity challenges while sharpening my skills in risk analysis, strategic planning, and technical problem-solving. Collaborating with my teammates, Hope and Bradford, and benefiting from the expert guidance of Professor Teresa Duvall, I gained a deeper understanding of cybersecurity best practices. One highlight we had was having the opportunity to visit local businesses and give out risk assessments. The experience underscored the critical role of teamwork and effective communication in achieving successful outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
