Persona: Sports Management Major Content Creator

Social media personas are what help create good media. It highlights your personality, and it creates a bond between you and your audience. Once they get too familiar with your persona, they will be drawn more to you. Especially if you are relatable.

For my persona, I took on the role of Sports Management major content creator. With this persona, I can display what it’s like being a sport management student and share my experiences with other people. My social media of choice is my Instagram. In my bio, I put, “Women working in sports.”  This helps those who come across my page indicate that I am somebody who simply works in sports. It also grabs the attention of other women who love sports and may be interested in trying to do the same. When it comes to a series of posts, I posted 6 different photos of my experiences while being an SMGT major. I made it into a highlight, so that people can see it forever since Instagram stories only last 24 hours. Last year I was doing lots of volunteer work for my Sports Practicum class, which I documented and took pictures of every experience. And I joined the Sports Management Association Club as well, so I posted an update from our last meeting. I also shared an experience from another semester where I had to sell football programs to those who came to our football game.

When it comes to my tone of post, I always try to keep everything light-hearted. I will joke around and call my volunteer work a “side quest.” To create the question, how in the world is she getting all these crazy side quests? Which can prompt others to ask. The most serious post I have is when I spoke on being a Black woman within the sports industry. Many people liked this post because it is not an easy task at all. It was meant to empower other Black women who could be interested in sports or just simply want to excel within the workplace unapologetically! Also, I promoted the ODU Sports Management Association club so that we can attract more people to join.

My post got okay engagement. Many of my followers on Instagram are dead followers (meaning they probably don’t use the account anymore) or people who aren’t interested in sports at all. But for the ones who did engage, they were appreciative of me showing my experience not just as an SMGT major, but as a college student in general. People are always going to look for relatable experiences that they can learn from when it’s their turn to make decisions. If I had to improve on anything, I would probably be a bit more informative about what I am doing. My posts were pretty vague, and people might be too shy to ask exactly what they want.
