/>

Prior to the infamous game, the Pacers had been eliminated by the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals. This left the Pistons hungry and determined to win a championship.

A Simple Foul Ignites the Fire

To set the scene, the Pacers were up by 15 at this point. They were dominating on offense and defense, there was no doubt in their minds that there were not going to win this game. The atmosphere was intense affecting everyone that was present in the palace. The Piston’s fans were in an uproar screaming at their team to get it together. Meanwhile the Pistons are fighting with all of their might trying to get back into the game.

Then all of a sudden, Jamaal looks at Ron Artest and says, “You can get your foul now,” Giving Artest the green light for a hard foul. This created a sense of tunnel vision for Artest, so he took the opportunity when Ben Wallace went for a layup. He shoves Wallace and this is where the chaos begins. For background, Wallace already had a chip on his shoulder. With the recent loss of his brother, he was already in a horrible mental space. This push anger Wallace causing him to push Artest back which escalated tensions on the court. A scuffle ensures on the court between players, but there had been no punches thrown at this time.

The Moment Everything Changed

At this point of time, Artest had been in therapy for anxiety and depression. Which is where he learned ways to calm himself down during times where he got overwhelmed. So, he decided to go lay on the score table, close his eyes and woosah. Wallace was still fuming and starts throwing his hand bands and wristbands at Artest. But up until this point no violence had actually occurred.

As I mentioned before, fans were already in an uproar. The usual season ticket holders had abandoned their seats at this point in the game, naturally the other fans started trickling down to those seats.

Suddenly, a bear cup flew from the stands and landed directly on Artest (who was still laying on the score table). In a matter of seconds, all control was lost.

And the Crowd goes… Violent?

An angry Artest, charged into the stands and throws the first punch of the intense brawl at the fan who he thought was the culprit of the cup throwing. Chaos quickly erupted. Other players joined in on the fight against the crowd, security nowhere to be found, and fists were constantly flying.

When they finally pulled Artest out of the stands and onto the court, a fan approaches Artest aggressively. Which lead to another punch being thrown. Jermaine O’Neal, who tried to come to Artest’s aid, slipped and missed a punch that could have been catastrophic.

Before all of the players were gathered together, Ron Artest and Reggie Miller happened to be beside each other. Out of nowhere, a cop attempts to pepper spray Artest, but Miller (who was sidelined due to an injury) stops him.

Once the players were finally gathered together, they began to head back to the locker room. During this time, fans began throwing different objects at the players, including a chair. It was such a gut-wrenching sight to see how much hatred was put towards these players at this time.

The Aftermath

The Pacers walked into the game as potential champions and left as the “villains” of the night. Once this situation hit the media, they focused on labeling them as “thugs” and “wannabe gangstas.” This put the NBA in the hot seat, because everybody was wondering what was going to be their next move. In an attempt to polish their image, they punished the players that were involved. Showing that they prioritized their corporate image, rather than the players’ actual perspectives. This is the suspensions that were handed out:

Artest: Suspended for the remainder of the season.

O’Neal: 24-game suspension (later reduced).

Jackson: Suspended for 30 games.

Wallace: Suspended for 6 games.

The media did not hold back, they were relentless. They began blaming hip-hop culture, tattoos, and the “bad boy” image of African American athletes. In response to this, the NBA implemented a strict dress code, so that they could reshape their imagine for cooperate sponsors.

The Unspoken Truth: What About the Fans?

The million dollar question of what happened to the fans involved was eventually answered. The man who started it all by throwing the cup was none other than John Green. In an interview John was asked if he felt any remorse about the situation and he answered by saying no, he was just happy that Artest mistakenly attacked the man beside him. John was later charged with assault and battery.

The other fans involved were also faced with legal action, but realistically the media ignored the role of the fans in the escalation of the situation. This left the players with an empty feeling of abandoment triggered by the NBA, because they believed they were only punished to protect the league’s revenue and reputation.

Lasting Effects

This incident had a harsh mental impact on the players involved and was a dark time for all of them. Reggie Miller ended up retiring, in which he never got his championship. Ron Artest requested a trade and ended up with the Los Angeles Lakers, but still had to deal with the agonizing feeling of letting down his former Indiana teammates. Many of them were upset with him, because of this decision. Jermaine O’Neal had to take the largest blows from the situation, because the blame was pinned upon him. He continued to play in the NBA, but this incident stuck with him.

The Truth Shall be Set Free

For years, these men stayed silent. Voices drowned out by the narratives that had been placed in the media. Finally, they were apart of a documentary named Untold: Malice at the Palace. Where they finally got to reveal their thoughts and feelings about the situation.

What happened on November 19th, 2004 was not just a “street brawl”, it was a huge turning point in NBA history. This incident opened up a door to the truth of how quickly the relationship between players, fans and the media can turn sour. And for those involved, it left scars that will remain long after the final buzzer.

By: Ryana Garner A Championship Dream Turned Nightmare November 19th, 2004, was supposed to just be another NBA finals game, but it became one of the most infamous nights in sports history.
