The first 100 hours of my internship experience with Meals on Wheels has been very insightful and educating. I have gained valuable experience working in a non-profit and community health organization focused on improving the well-being of older adults. My role as an intern has been concentrated in multiple areas, including meal preparation, working on projects for improvements, and updating systems of clients and volunteers. I also have been able to learn about the organization’s daily operations, including volunteer coordination, scheduling, and client documentation. Throughout my internship, I have observed the significance of teamwork and communication among staff, volunteers, and partners. I have participated in administrative tasks such as organizing client information, assisting with outreach efforts, and learning how eligibility needs are assessed. One of the most beneficial and meaningful aspects of this internship has been the ability to see the impact of consistent nutritious meal delivery and social interaction has on elderly populations. This experience has strengthened my understanding of the social determinants of health and the role community organizations play in ensuring healthy lifestyles. Overall, the first 100 hours has provided me with exceptional experience in healthcare services, client services, and community health engagement. I have developed stronger communication and organizational skills, as well as an admiration for patient care that values the betterment for those who need assistance. This internship has deepened my interest and desire in pursuing a career in healthcare and has offered realistic insight to the reality of how organizations, such as Meals on Wheels, serve and provide for others in need.
The second 100 hours of my internship with Meals on Wheels, I continued to build on the roles on and responsibilities given to me. Each morning I would assist with meal preparation and volunteer pickup, which allowed me to build relationships and understand community impact. Working with members of staff, volunteers, and members of the community, I was able to learn about daily operations of a community-based organization. My role and responsibilities required me to communicate professionally, help with organizational tasks, stay organized, and work towards team goals. The last 100 hours of the internship have allowed me to be more confident in my abilities in the healthcare setting, as well as asking for guidance and feedback when necessary. I was able to continue to develop and strengthen my communication, team work, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Also, I was able to gain a true understanding of the challenges faced by older adults and the significance of community resources that help individuals maintain their independence and quality of life. Understanding the different roles that make up an organization was crucial for my knowledge. Before this experience, I did not have a genuine understanding of the different responsibilities, needs, tasks, etc. that organizations like Meals on Wheels faces. As I completed my last 100 hours, I had the opportunity to further my knowledge I have gained from my courses and use them in a real-world setting that I would be able to take with me as I finish school and start my career. This experience has increased my confidence, professionalism, and my understanding of how healthcare and community organizations work together to serve individuals and populations in need.
