On February 25, 2025, the Dallas Mavericks went up against the Los Angeles Lakers, and let’s just say, it wasn’t the best game. The Mavs lost 107-99, and while it was a hard-fought game, it just felt like the Lakers were always one step ahead. At the start, things were looking good for Dallas. Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson were hitting shots and keeping it close. For a while, it seemed like the Mavs might actually pull off a win, but as the game went on, the Lakers just had more depth and experience.
The first half was pretty back-and-forth, and the Mavs managed to hold a small lead, but, the Lakers weren’t going to let that last. LeBron James had another big game, finishing with 27 points and 12 rebounds. He did what he does bestscoring when it mattered most and making plays for the Lakers. But the most frustrating part? Watching Luka Dončić dominate from the other side. Honestly, it made zero sense that he’s not on the Mavs anymore. That trade still doesn’t sit right. Watching Luka do his thing for the Lakers? That hurt.
The Mavs stayed competitive in the third quarter, but things really started to fall apart in the fourth. The offense went cold, and they couldn’t get the ball to go in when they needed it. There were a couple of turnovers. The Lakers took advantage, and before you knew it, the game was slipping away.
Kyrie and Klay tried their best to keep the Mavs in it. Irving finished with 22 points and 8 assists, and Thompson added some big shots, but it wasn’t enough. The Lakers’ defense stepped up in the final moments, and the Mavs couldn’t get anything going on offense. It just wasn’t their night.
The thing that made this loss sting even more was seeing how Luka was playing for the Lakers. I mean, I get it, he’s an incredible player, he led us to the finals last year, but watching him hit shots and lead another team felt so wrong. It’s still hard to believe the Mavs traded him away. That decision is still frustrating to this day.
In the end, the Mavs just couldn’t execute when they needed to. They had chances, but couldn’t make the most of them. This game was a reminder that while Dallas has a lot of talent, they’re still figuring things out. It’s games like this that show they need to be better at closing out games, especially when playing against a team like the Lakers. Hopefully, they’ll learn from this and bounce back next time. For now, though, this loss definitely stings.
