I think this is one of my favorite assignments. I enjoy helping people in general, but this assignment made me focus on the emotions of the people I help. For this assignment, I mainly focused on my family because of the social distancing rule. So, I was limited to the things I could help them with, but I found that the little things made a big difference. I feel like this assignment connected to my freshman student experience program that I was in where I had to lead a group of freshmen on a volunteer trip. We had to help sort donations and afterward, I got to talk to the students, and they said that they enjoyed it because they could help someone who would need the clothes that they sorted. I especially liked that I could make my mom happy by cleaning the living room without being asked. I feel like I will continue to do random acts of kindness because of how much I made my family feel. I chose this image because it represents the fact that I am reading this information gaining knowledge from it. Then formulating my own opinion and giving my take on said knowledge.

I learned a couple of things from watching this video and doing this assignment. I learned that social psychologist believes that it is possible to have a negative feeling towards someone and say racial slurs, and not be prejudice. After watching this video I disagreed that Michele was in fact racist because he brought up facts that were intended for the heckler’s particular race to make the heckler submit to him in a way. In my Interpreting the African Past class we talked about how slaves were traded and that their masters would use scare tactics to make them submit to their ways. By Michele bringing up “lynching” he was showing that master-slave mentality making him above the African American heckler ultimately being racist and discriminatory of the black heckler. Being a Nigerian American woman this video personally rubbed me the wrong way. That being because I am African I get discriminating questions about my culture.

Through this self-portrait assignment, I had to pick several pictures that I believed represented my self-portrait. I ended up choosing six pictures of special events in my life that I felt represented my educated, fun, and cultured side. I learned that even though these pictures represented me in small bits and pieces, but these six pictures did not define me as a person. I learned by using my SQR score it told me how confident I would be in most situations. I also that this self-portrait is a way that I used self-promotion so I could let my reader view me I different lights with the different pictures I had chosen. I think this applied when I was applying for college or a position as a Freshman Service Experience Leader because I had to write my resume with my qualifications to be excepted into ODU and that program. I had to show them in my resume how good I would be for the position I wanted to be in. As well as, when I went for my job interview. I had to show up dressed formally to present myself in a way that is professional.

Heuristics are defined as simple rules for making complex decisions or quickly drawing inferences and seemingly effortless manner. Heuristics is a reliable problem-solving tool that I found out that I use every day. In the first assignment, I went in-depth and talked about four categories of heuristics which are representative, availability heuristics, anchoring and adjustment heuristics, and status quo heuristics. These heuristics individually are effective problem-solving methods that we use to pass judgment over problems we have or just simple situations. Sometimes they are not the best tools to use for the fact that they can lead to stereotypical bias such as in representative heuristics or overlooking a product because of how “old” or “new” something is using status quo heuristics.
In my Interpreting the African Past course we discussed how people are so surprised to find out that Africa is flourishing and how it is not just full of poverty and animals of the jungle. It is full of rich culture and so many great things, but some people didn’t know that they just assumed that because that is what they were shown on the news that is using representative heuristics because they are making judgments of Africa by just what they’ve heard on the news not traveling and seeing for themselves.
I’ve learned so much from doing this assignment when the appropriate time is to use these heuristics to solve problems quickly and effectively. This image below shows the heuristics representative and status quo. I picked it because it showed this song in the movie High School Musical represents how people decide where you fit in based on your outlay appearance or that just because you like one thing you can’t like another.
