Exploring Culture
Throughout this course there were many activities that we accomplished both in class and for homework that helped educate students on the culture of Spanish speaking countries. With every lesson there was at least one activity where we had to apply what we were learning to the habits of a Spanish speaking country.
Doing these types of activities helped me realize how similar cultures are in Spanish speaking countries compared to our cultural habits. They helped open my mind to other possibilities in other cultures that I had never really considered before. On top of that, I also learned a lot about how different our culture is from those in Hispanic countries. One of the main differences that stuck with me was the work day schedule. Some Spanish speaking countries have a built hour for a resting period during the work day.
Engaging in Communities
There are so many important connections and transactions we make with people daily and it is almost crucial to engage with the people and surroundings in your culture. There was a project that we had to do where we interviewed a partner and asked about them and what they do.
This project that we did helped me get a better understanding of what it is like to formally interview someone and how to keep a conversation engaging.
Interpersonal Communication
There were many homework activities where we had to mimic conversations with people, both formally and informally. These activities helped me learn when to use usted, which is the formal way to speak to someone who you respect.
There were many activities like this one in Lingro Hub where we had to fill in the blank with the appropriate verb and conjugation. I learned a lot from these activities as they helped me learn how to respond to questions appropriately and correctly. I found that I was able to complete these tasks with ease and little to no confusion or issues.
Presentational Writing
There were a few presentational writing assignments we did this semester along with our projects.
With each activity we did like this, I saw improvement in each one. Not only has my vocabulary expanded, so has my gender agreement and conjugations. It is very neat to see your progress.
Interpretive Listening
In lingro hub there were many activities where you had to respond to a recording with a voice audio. These helped with my cognitive understanding of Spanish and allowed me to interpret native Spanish speakers.
We listened to things like favorite activities, descriptions of people, admirable qualities in a person, as well as basic greetings and small talk conversations.
