The method used by the authors was a systematic review approach through studying online social media and reviewing literature about cyberbullying. Research was conducted on over 71 different articles and research papers from 2007-2022. These articles were thoroughly analysed and used to extract data to reach an accurate and narrow consensus. This led the authors to develop their three phases of study to find the definition, prevalence, and the impact of cyberbullying.

In this article the authors develop several questions concerning these 3 phases of study which are: how is cyberbullying defined according to other sources? What factors contribute to cyberbullying and how can we measure them? How does personality impact you becoming the bully or victim? How does the direct and indirect involvement affect the prevalence? Then lastly, what is the impact on the victims and how can they mitigate the effects of cyberbullying?

The first and most important question was how is cyberbullying defined according to other sources. The definition of cyberbullying poses great inconsistencies from other sources that have researched the topic, which is why the authors would like to reach, as they say, a unified conceptual framework. It was discovered that some elements overlapped between traditional bullying and cyberbullying. These elements included repetition, power imbalance, intent, and harm, with the addition from another source was goal directed. A more appropriate definition was formed based off the research and analysis of other sources, “The use of technology to manipulate and exploit targeted vulnerable victims using online aggression or harassment and repeated threats, to embarrass or humiliate by posting harmful content, with the purpose or intent to cause psychological and emotional harm, in some cases, leading to physical harm.”

This article heavily relates to the human factor that was discussed in module 4. The human capabilities which include physical sensory, emotional, and intellectual. The human factor certainly influences how our online behavior reflects the nature of people in a physical setting. This human factor in regards to cyberbullying has led to the development of ways to mitigate this degenerate online behavior. As the authors include how most users online start out as observers and then eventually find themselves as active participants in cyberbullying. What can be seen as lighthearted roasting may eventually turn into a harmful engagement online due to the differing interpretation of different people. Another way to describe the human factor in regards to cyberbullying is through cyberpsychology. Cyberpsychology is the study of how we interact with others using technology. This really leaves no surprise that bullying occurs in the online space as much as it does in the physical realm. As it shows in the article from the given research by the authors, their discovery through other sources stated that the major factor that influenced cyberbullying was the anonymity factor. A forum filled with anonymous users can either mitigate or add fuel to the fire, meaning that users can jump into the bullying/roasting or they can reduce. However, it’s the anonymity that enables more people who normally wouldn’t behave in such a manner to join in the roasting because of the lack of consequences faced online.

The study of cyberbullying, the human factor, and cyberpsychology has also opened doors to study victim precipitation. This is the analyzing of the victims behavior to see how it contributed to victimization. The authors discovered that there are several factors or behaviors that can contribute to victimization of cyberbullying. These factors include self disclosure, sexual orientation status, emotional instability, social media addiction, number of social media followers, and relationship to victims of cyberbullying. It’s suggested by the authors that one of the ways to prevent online cyberbullying is to provide intervention programs targeting people that fall under the dark triad of machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism. Even though children and adolescents are the main demographic engaging in this behavior, A significant portion of them score high in one or more of these traits.

In conclusion, programs framed around cyberbullying intervention for offenders and prevention for victims can aid in the study to understand the psychology behind the keyboards and progress the effectiveness of treatments for victims of cyber offenders.

Reference: Ray, Geraldine, et al. “Cyberbullying on Social Media: Definitions, Prevalence, and Impact Challenges.”
