The similarities can even be overwhelming at times considering how the two are dealt with daily. For example, in a study by Payne and Hadzhidimova, it was shown that criminologists regularly provide insight into the extent of various forms of cyber offending and victimization. One study noted in their article found that “the overall illegal downloads rate across all countries stood at 47.47%, while hacking perpetration was 5.38 percent” (Udris, 2016, p. 133). Another study of 378 teenagers found that a third of them had engaged in sexting behaviors (Martinez-Prather & Vandiver, 2014). Criminologists recognize that official reports from government agencies miss the “dark figure” of crime. The “dark figure” of crime represents those crimes that are never reported. They do this while also understanding that self-reported experiences with cybercrime and victimization are flawed as well. Still, depending on the nature of the cybercrime research, the article shows that both official crime data and self-reported studies can be used to measure cyber offending and victimization. This overlap is also related to cybersecurity. The article suggests that “with appropriate training, criminal justice graduates could potentially be prepared for some of the “softer” careers in cyber security.” At the end of 2017, nearly 750,000 individuals in the United States worked in cyber security careers. What is more striking, however, is the fact that there were more than 280,000 job openings in the United States at that same time (Cyberseek.org, 2017). The article shows that while many of these jobs would require graduates from a STEM discipline, others require employees with strong communication, critical thinking, and policy development skills (or skills that are promoted in criminal justice). Overall, having a criminal justice degree by itself will not prepare students for these jobs; however, criminal justice coursework combined with the appropriate STEM courses or cyber security/cybercrime courses would provide graduates the skills they need to thrive in those careers.

Reference:

Payne, B.
