Researchers and scientists need ways to publish their research and to get the word out about the work that they’ve done, so they turn to papers and journals to get their work out there. Researchers utilize primary, and secondary sources and peer review to publish their findings.

There are two types of papers that can be written about scientific topics and published in a scientific journal: a primary research article and a secondary research article. The primary research article is one that follows the entirety of the experiment or a study and is likely to tell the methods researchers used along with their hypothesis and their results so that other scientists may be able to replicate their work. A secondary research article is one like a scientific magazine that has not been reviewed by other scientists; therefore, it is still scientific and factual in nature, however it is not a full study and cannot be replicated. It is just a basic translation of other researchers’ work or timely news.

On the other hand, a review article or a peer reviewed work is when a group of scientists for professionals in a certain field read over a certain researcher’s scientific paper to decide if it is factual enough and original enough to be published in a scientific journal. It is not only if their paper is factual enough but also that it can be replicated by other scientists, as that is a very important focus in science. The process of publishing a researcher’s work is very difficult and time consuming. If the researcher wants to publish it in a journal, then they must get it peer-reviewed first. This process can sometimes be a couple months to even a few years long and involves multiple steps where the paper is read by many different people. The first person that sees it is normally the editor of the journal and they are allowed to reject or accept that paper for review. The paper then gets reviewed by a group of “peers” which are other scientists that work in the same field as the researcher wishing to publish. Those professionals then review that paper and decide if they think the work is original, if it can be replicated, and if it sounds well thought out and written. At that point, if they decide to approve that paper for publication, it gets re-sent to the editor for a second time (and might have edits from the peers to make changes to) and they get to decide if that paper really should be published. Most of the time journals are very selective in which papers they approve to be published, even having up to a 90% rejection rate (Cornell, 2021).

Between the Oxford paper and the Cold Spring Harbor paper, I believe that the Oxford paper is the primary article, and the Cold Spring Harbor is the review article. I think the Oxford paper is the primary article because there is an introduction, abstract, materials and methods, and a discussion section. On the other hand, I think the Cold Spring Harbor paper is the review paper because it is just that: a review of a scientific finding. There is no materials and methods section meaning that there was no original work being done and shown for.

In the science world, research is very important for learning new information and gaining new skills in the field you’re working in.
