Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
- Computer Science- Computer Science is the study of computers and computational systems, including their theoretical and algorithmic foundations, hardware and software. Cybersecurity is a sub-field of Computer Science and complement Computer Science very nicely. A lot of people who study Computer Science also learn Cybersecurity in one form or another.
- Information Technology- This is the study of computer networks and the safeguarding of data, information, and creating and administrating databases etc. This major is the most directly related to Cybersecurity in that both majors work on monitoring and securing databases. Cybersecurity is just a piece of IT will IT encompasses a broad spectrum of stuff (Administering, Hardware etc.)
- Cyber crime – Cyber crime is a major very similar to Cybersecurity. It can prepare students for careers in IT or Law Enforcement. You learn the same basics as you would in Cybersecurity but with a focus on Crime that is what the biggest difference is.
- Computer Engineering- This a branch of Engineering that builds and designs computer systems. I called this the hardware component of Computer Science. Cybersecurity again is an important part that complements Computer Engineering the same way that it complements Computer Science.
All four of these major at Old Dominion University Impress me very much, but I think Cyber Security is more important because without Cybersecurity in place none of these systems can work. Cybersecurity links all of these together by making sure they run smooth and keep out the bad actors that want to make use technology for their own gain etc.
