Article Review #1: AI and How it Affects Cyber Crime Investigations

Introduction

In today’s age, Artificial Intelligence is ever growing and can be seen in many aspects of life. You see it within smartphones and other devices, social media, finances, customer service, and many other parts of everyday life. AI has also made an appearance within our crime prevention agencies and has helped the process of investigations.

Social Science

The topic of how artificial intelligence affects cybercrime investigations can be perceived as a social science, such as criminology. It can be perceived as criminology because investigators are using it to understand, detect, and prevent crimes from happening over the internet. AI allows for areas of pattern recognition, neural networks, data mining, and other systems. One of these other systems is machine learning, and it is used to predict and prevent cyber crimes by identifying risks and vulnerabilities.

Research Methods

According to Faquir, the types of research methods used by AI to acquire data was the “normative juridical research method” and the “scientific research method” (Faquir, 2023). These methods have a firmly established root within the domain of legal studies and offer knowledge on legal documents, codes, legislation, and other resources necessary to understand the current laws. To process all this information the “content analysis method” serves as the framework for the current research study.

Relation to the Presentation

AI is very important to the operational integrity of investigations, but also requires individuals to further explore the information and input new functions. With this I believe that the individuals who oversee the AI and investigations closely resemble the characteristics described within the PowerPoint presentation. I believe that it is necessary to have interest in both fields of criminology and computer science, as well as being able to put themselves into the minds of the criminals.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I believe that AI has had a very important role when it comes to investigating cyber crimes and analyzing data. Even though investigators would be able to continue to do the same tasks, AI has made it easier to process data, find patterns, and predict and prevent future cyber crimes from happening. As AI further grows, it might even be able to prevent future cyber crimes from happening entirely.
