For Statistics and Biology, I am doing well because I have passed all of my exams and am doing the homeworks long before the due date, and getting 100’s on all of them. For Biology Lab, I have gotten 100’s on every pre-leb, as well as the notebook assignments due at the end of class. For Intro to Health Professions, I am completing my assignments on time and getting 100’s on every assignment.

Two classes I have identified as possibly needing assistance in are Chemistry and Chemistry Lab. In Chemistry, one not so well exam score drops your grade 40 points, so in order to succeed in the course, I need to study hard for what i expect to be on the exams. For Chemistry Lab, I don’t really need help, but I need to spend some extra time doing the post lab reflections. Pertaining to Chemistry, I spend at least 30 minutes a day studying and reflecting back upon the powerpoints. I have made more time in my schedule for chemistry rather than hanging out with my friends or spending time on my phone.

Transition to College

Coming to college, I expected to do well in every class. I expected to pass every class easily with an “A” and I expected to not have to study as much because things just came easy to me. This is not true in the slightest. I am doing well in most of my classes, but classes that came easy to me in high school, I am struggling with in college. I have to study so much more than I did previously because I feel as though I am basically teaching myself here, and that’s not the case in high school. What came naturally to me in high school isn’t the case here. I also expected to spend a lot of time by myself, rather than spending time with others. Now that I’m here, I have a great friend group. I am bonding with people in the Living Learning Community and I’m more open to “putting myself out there,” unlike how I was in high school. I love spending time by myself, but it’s very rare that I am not spending time with friends, and I am enjoying that just as much.

My toughest challenge moving away to college is not being able to spend as much time with my mom as I would like. I love hanging out with my mom, and she’s one of my best friends, so not being able to just talk to her about my day face-to-face is difficult. The easiest challenge I’ve had to overcome is taking care of myself. Back at home, if I ever wanted anything or if I wanted to do anything, I had to do it by myself. That’s the same case here, so this was a fairly easy challenge to overcome.

Major

Something I have learned about my intended major (Public Health) that I did not know at the beginning of the semester is that a Statistics class is required for my major. I also didn’t expect to take so many Chemistry and Biology courses, with a lab corresponding to each. Something I also didn’t expect is Lab courses to only be a 1 credit course. That was shocking.

My feelings have not changed regarding my intended major. I still feel confident in my choice with the major I have chosen, but it has been a little difficult knowing that I am not passing as much as I would like too. As long as I study and be consistent with it, this will be easier and I will love my major choice even more.

Major wise, I am not interested in learning about another subject. Minor wise, I am considering a minor in Psychology or Theater. I spoke to my advisor, and she recommended that I do Psychology as a minor. I love learning about mental health and obtaining a better understanding of human behavior, so this is a possible interest for me. For Theater, this is something I have loved since high school, and I even wrote my admission essay about musical theater. It’s something that has always fascinated me, and getting to possibly pursue a career in something theater related would mean the world to me.

Connecting to Campus

Two problems or challenges I have encountered this semester are not being natural in my studies like I was in high school, and not having the means of transportation I am used to back home. I’m used to passing every class easily because I already knew the information off the top of my head, and classes in high school weren’t as test heavy as they are here. As a resource, I have looked into chemistry tutoring that is offered at ODU. Transportation wise, I have my car back at home, so anytime I wanted to go anywhere I could just drive myself. Here, I’m not really comfortable riding the buses or taking an uber, so I would just wait until I could go back home and get whatever it was I needed or order it on amazon. Resources at ODU that help with this are the POD market, the mailing center, and Starbucks at the Webb.

My roommate, Ashley, has helped me a lot this semester. We have all the same classes, so she’s a good helper when it comes to studying for exams and for helping with assignments we are both struggling with. All of the students in the LLC I have developed close bonds with and they are all really helpful for our shared classes when it comes to tests, quizzes, homeworks, etc. Lastly, my peer mentor, Madyson Fannon, has been extremely helpful in just the overall process of transitioning to college. She’s very communicative and is always checking on us to make sure we are doing okay. She provides all of us with good study habits and even gives us some good tips when it comes to having previous professors she has had. She has been one of the most helpful people I’ve had the chance to work with on campus.

I have not attended an interest meeting for any clubs as of right now. I did hear information about Global Brigades and the Pre-Health club while in my other classes, but I haven’t joined either of those as of right now. For this semester, I wanted to get a feel of what exactly I needed to be doing to pass before I started any extracurriculars or clubs.

Madyson Fannon, My Peer Mentor.

Ashley, My Roommate.

Study Habits The classes I am doing well in are Statistics, Biology, Biology Lab, and Intro to Health Professions.
