Shayla Bess
My name is Shayla and I am back with another corner of the net devoted to my new psych class, Cross Cultural Psychology.
I am a Psych major. I plan on pursuing higher degrees including a MS and PhD. I have a goal of opening up a mental health facility for Black Women and women of color, since we are always left out and need a lot of help. It isn’t a lot of safe places for us, and I want to be one of the first, and hopefully many that will realize that we need help as well. I figure working as a psychiatric nurse will give me the experience and knowledge needed to get my goal ready.
I am from CT, but my home is in DC. I work as a traveling Medical Tech and I am currently in a hospital in New England working as a Chem Tech. It has been a stressful time but I love what I do. Luckily I was extended so I can finish this semester here without worrying about moving in the middle of the semester. I am 40 yrs old, and basically a lifelong student! I have no kids (yet) and a spoiled cat that lives with my mother, as I am not sure I can tear her away and bring her with me. I don’t want her to be lonely while I am working long hours. I love traveling, so far this is my first assignment but I am glad I made this decision.
I am taking this course to get a more broad area of psychology, more information that can help me pursue my goal. I also plan on using my medical knowledge in my goal to help those women with mental issues/ instability. I have my certification in Research and Development, and Pharm Tech (I will be going for my license in a few months). I plan on using all my medical knowledge and academic knowledge to help women balance themselves. I see mental illnesses as an imbalance within the body and want to work with the person holistically to make sure she is back to herself and able to function and pursue her dreams.
There are a lot of things I am still tweaking, but it will be ready by the time I am ready to open my doors.
