Community Based Experience

Service-Learning Project: The service-learning project provided a unique opportunity for students to become involved with community programs that influence health. My own experience elevated our classroom lessons to a new level. For my service-learning project, I volunteered at my local Salvation Army.

  • Benefits: Service-learning offers plenty of benefits over traditional classroom learning. Students get the opportunity to learn about their connections with their communities. Students may also discover more about their ability to serve others. The experience may also enable students to obtain career-related skills. Students gain the opportunity to play and significant role in community health.
  • Leadership skills: Problem-solving, critical thinking, decision making, adaptability and dependability.
  • Relational skills: Reducing prejudices and promoting cultural and ethnic awareness, personal and interpersonal development, communication skills, social responsibility and development of citizenship skills.
  • Through my experience, I gained valuable knowledge that could be beneficial to both researchers and practitioners in the fields of public health and global health. By closely monitoring the number of individuals who utilize certain services, we can determine effective ways to expand those services to other communities in need. Additionally, the pricing system used to determine the cost of pre-owned items for sale may provide insight into what price points are acceptable for individuals who may not have financial stability.
