I saw this best with TalkAbroad assignments and FlipGrids (the first half of the semester). These utilized “normal” questions in order for us to see the parallels and similarities between my culture and Spanish culture. My favorite part about learning the Spanish language is its culture; it’s vibrant and lively and has always intrigued me.

Hispanic culture is predominately rooted on close-knit communities and I love that. Any pivotal moment is celebrated through the entire family, we saw this with the move to college in Unit 18. These transformative experiences are big celebrations that the whole family comes together to honor. During my 2nd TalkAbroad it became tricky because my partner from Nicaragua didn’t understand the word “influencer” as I do being from the US. She had said her favorite influencer is her parents. Once I answered my question with a famous person, she better understood how I intended influencer to be defined. This was a little tricky because I wasn’t sure how to describe an American influencer to someone not familiar. I realized then, that I needed to do a better job of coming prepared for people to not know what I’m talking about.

Engaging in Communities

I find it very valuable to engage in our communities close and far. We only have one world so embracing our differences will help foster important conversations. We love our communities enough to be apart of them, so we should engage with those within our own communities but also in different communities.

I was able to engage with a native Spanish speaker, Karen, from Nicaragua through the TalkAbroad application.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad is a learning application we use two times a semester. A native Spanish speaker joins us on a Zoom-like call to help us converse using the units we just studied. This is a helpful site because it encourages us to use our units in relaxed environments. Utilizing the vocabulary we learn in this way benefits me tremendously. I’m able to see how native speakers converse in informal conversations that are more likely for me to use in the future.

TalkAbroad was a spontaneous communication activity we used because our conversations had guiding questions but we didn’t know how our speaker would answer or what they’d ask. I think TalkAbroad helped me with seeing the areas I need to work on more and prepare for prior to my next year of Spanish. I have a hard time using basic language structure in Spanish so that’s what I’ll work on. I did much better comprehending what my partner was asking me and saw myself enjoying the conversations much more because I knew what was being said.

Discussion board posts weren’t as exciting for me. I did appreciate being able to be myself and answer with my own opinion, but I struggled to bring my thoughts from English to Spanish. I learned I had to think in Spanish about what I know instead of trying to translate my deeper thinking from English. This way, I wasn’t overcomplicating my answers or running the risk of saying the wrong thing.

A discussion post and responses I made during this semester.

Presentational Speaking

This semester was filled with presentational speaking activities as our projects required videos. We had an influencer video, a tradition video, and an identity video.

The influencer video was at the end of the semester and one of my favorites. It allowed me to talk about something that is in my daily life that I could grasp. The most challenging part was making sure to describe my influencer in a Spanish way that made it clear she was a digital creator and not someone I looked to as much for my own personal goals like my parents.

This is my speaking video about my favorite biracial influencer, Monet McMichael.

Presentational Writing

We didn’t have as many assignments just writing for this class. Project 19 we wrote about the transformative experience that Francisco faced on his journey to college.

This assignment was definitely one of my weaker assignments. Up until this point, I was still struggling to put my thoughts into Spanish from English. Next time I will use to vocabulary I know and the vocabulary list we had to create sentences from those options. I made it far more difficult for myself by trying to use my English thoughts in Spanish.

Interpretive Listening

In English, give a very brief 2-3-line description of interpretive listening activities you completed this semester for or related to your Spanish learning. (See Modes of Communication link for description and examples). Prior to each project we typically had a video to watch and learn the story we would be doing a project on. Hearing the listening portion helped incorporate deeper learning as I was able to add a voice behind the words. My favorite way of interpretive listening is listening to Spanish music.

Over the past summer, I was in the Dominican Republic and heard the song, Pepas. I listened and just sang along not knowing what it meant. At the beginning of this semester, our professor told us listening to Spanish music would help. I recently tasked myself to learn what Pepas was about so I could truly immerse myself in the language. Utilizing a mix of listening and understanding helps grow my Spanish vocabulary.

The Spanish song I tasked myself to learn and comprehend this semester.

Interpretive Reading

For this class, we had writing pieces accompanied by each unit we studied. This helped give us a background understanding of what we’d learn.

I definitely struggle the most with reading in Spanish. We typically got a large paragraph or lengthy short story to read. We had to almost infer what we were reading because there was no help from Contraseña with explaining what we were reading. I had to use context clues to make sense of what I was reading which made it challenging for me. I did overcome it but it took a longer time than I would have hoped.

The story of Francisco’s journey to college.

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication Exploring Culture Spanish 202 had a bigger aspect of a better understanding of Spanish culture.
