It was the first book in Spanish I had ever been introduced to and sparked my interest in reading more books in Spanish. We were given certain chapters to read and interpret so that we could later talk about them in class. In my opinion, this contributed to my ability to interpret what my current Spanish class was reading for the fall semester, La Profe de Español. While I did need to reread the text a couple of times to fully understand the chapter, I was still able to get the main idea of the section we were reading. An obstacle I had to overcome this semester was my fear of public speaking. I was always scared of public speaking because I feared the opinion of others. However, through a lot of practicing and the support of my friends I was able to get through it. I started out the semester with a very shaky voice and shaky hands and now I barely have either of those signs of nervousness. I do get a little nervous when speaking but not as much as I previously did when the semester first started. I would say my best work was my last speech because it felt as though a huge weight was lifted off of my shoulders, and it was not like the previous speeches. I say this because my speech had nice flow and it didn’t feels as rushed as the other ones. I have a tendency to speak fast when I am nervous about something, mainly public speaking.

Artifacts

For English class, I had to write a paper on a class evaluation and I was given a C for the paper. While I was in high school, I always believed that I wrote good papers. But once I wrote my first college paper, I realized that the papers I wrote for high school were at a high school level. For me, writing has always been a form of expression, so when I had to begin to buckle down and write academically it was a big change for me. In order to become a better writer, I consulted my English professor about my papers before submitting them. When she read my second essay, she stated that my essays often lack flow and structure. So, I began working on my papers based upon the advice given to me. I had always deemed myself to be a quality writer so I took the time to become better through asking my peers to reread my papers. After this essay, I was able to better write future papers because I knew what to avoid and what to include within my papers. This paper was the turning point that enabled me to write better papers for the time ahead.

Exploring Culture

The practices that helped me gain an understanding of cultural perspectives were mainly through making friends with people from different cultures and backgrounds. I understood the differences that we have were meant to be shared from a young age. I often enjoyed listening to my friends speak in their native language because it seemed so different from mine. Now, I still use those practices except I indulge more in their beliefs and food, not only just the language. As a child, I had a babysitter that only spoke Spanish. After spending some time there, I eventually caught on to what she was saying even though I didn’t know how to speak Spanish. It wasn’t until a couple years later when I learned the Spanish language.

I watched a lot of telenovelas as a child due to my babysitter often having Telemundo on the tv. I somewhat understood Mexican culture through my stay, but my learning didn’t expand until I reached middle school. I don’t believe my friendships or my babysitter changed my worldview. I believe it was because I was still a child and my main focus was not on perspective or worldview.

Engaging in Communities

In my opinion, engaging within my community is of great importance because I can learn from my experiences. I often found it rewarding when I worked with the homeless population at CARITAS because I learned how to empathize with others at a young age. I became more grateful for the things I had and was given through that encounter. I recently joined CRU at ODU. It is a Christian worship group that I often go to with my friends. I am not that much of a religious person but I do enjoy learning more about the bible and meeting new people.

I grew up as an only child so I had to learn how to become more extroverted. I believe that through going to clubs, I was able to open up more because everyone in the said club have the same interest. I still plan to volunteer with the homeless community so that I can determine what I can do to better my community. Volunteering has helped me gain a better perspective of the world. While I am still 18 and I have very little power to change the world, I realized that small changes can also be the most meaningful.

Presentational Writing

Inside of Spanish class, I was assigned to do many pamphlets and flyers but the project based upon clothing was my favorite because I was able to show my capabilities when it came to creativity. Also, I took a public speaking class this semester which is similar to what I had to do when presenting in Spanish class.

I felt more comfortable presenting to the class with every presentation I had to do. It was difficult to not look at the screen and read off of the board. But, I adapted to that through making flashcards or writing my thoughts down on a piece of paper. Similarly, I had to do the same thing for public speaking class. I had to do most of my presentations based upon memory or the usage of flashcards in order to explain my idea or subject. I excelled in compiling information for my project and I had no problem with projecting my voice for the class since I am a soft spoken person. I could do better next time through practicing more and also I could build my confidence when speaking in front of others. Ironically, I felt more comfortable speaking in front of my peers in Spanish class than I did in public speaking class. I think it was due to the fact that everyone was learning and it felt like there was less judgment.

Interpretive Listening

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24IGGWF0ntE&ab_channel=SeevounMullings

When I had to do TalkAbroad there were times where I had to use context clues to figure out what my partners were saying. While I understood most of what was said, there were some words that I had not learned yet.

For example, during this conversation with Josue for the second TalkAbroad conversation. I understood verbs like gustar, sentir, and poder but when he mentioned words like cepillarse, elegir, and crecer, I couldn’t comprehend what he was saying. I overcame this difficulty by paying attention to what he said about how he felt and what he disliked. Through that, I was able to interpret what he was saying. I found it interesting that Josue’s family made him eat foods he didn’t like, for example, pork. I also found it interesting that out of all of my conversation partners, I was able to understand him the best even though there were some words I couldn’t comprehend. My main takeaway from this experience is that I don’t necessarily need to understand a word when conversing with a native Spanish speaker. I can use other words and sentences within their statement to interpret what they’re saying. I have grown from each TalkAbroad session through building the courage to speak Spanish with native speakers. When I was in middle school, I was often anxious about having to speak Spanish with people that spoke it as a first language. But now, TalkAbroad has given me the backbone to speak with others even if I make mistakes.

Interpretive Reading

When we would read La Profe de Español in class, I recall having to reread what Professor Mitchell said in order to gain a better understanding. I do better reading visually than through reading from verbal means.

It was challenging for me because I am still learning Spanish and I have to read over the text at least twice in order to fully understand what I am reading. I understand that I will be able to better comprehend reading books in Spanish when I further my education in the subject. I overcame this difficulty by going over more vocabulary outside of class and using the Duolingo app on my phone. I have used Duolingo for years and it has always helped me further my skills in Spanish. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book because it was a bit of a mystery about what happened to María and I liked how everything tied to together. My main takeaway from the book is that peculiar things can happen mainly when people least expect it. I have grown with each activity through asking myself what happened in the book after reading each chapter so that I can confirm that I have grown with each year I have learned Spanish. Even when I couldn’t understand some parts of the storyline, I had to interpret/read between the lines so that I would not be confused.

Reflection : While I was in high school, my Spanish teacher introduced us to the book La Vampirata.
