Assignment 4

This assignment had me look into gender differences across cultures and how they looked in advertisements. I chose to look at North America and India. I found that in America things over sexualized. We also are not realistic in who is used in the ads. They are not a reflection of the average person. In India, their ads are more realistic and traditional. However, they suffer from an issue with colorism. The darker skin tones are not represented and are looked at as disgusting. Individuals are trying to alter their skin to be lighter. I did enjoy this assignment but I had a clue as to what the differences would look like; regardless of the culture, America looks very sexual I think.

Assignment 2

This assignment focused on American values. I reflected on the value of materialism; it is not too surprising that I am a materialistic person when viewed by someone culturally different from myself. I feel as though most Americans are in the same position as I am. We thrive on this value; we see it as rewarding hard work. However, I feel we have become dependent on meaningless objects, so much that they run our lives. I cannot leave the house without my cellphone. There are both good and bad things to materialism. It is important to remember that this is from a different culture’s point of view. No two countries share the same exact values; this is what makes cultures unique.
