Some of the top Cyber Security risks that USA currently face are Phishing attacks, Malware attacks, ransomware, Weak passwords, and Insider threats. These attacks encompass a majority of what they US currently faces due to large number of small businesses and large corporations. Phishing attacks currently account for 90% of all breaches that organizations face. They have grown 65% over the last year and they account for over $12 billion in business losses. This occurs when an attacker pretends to be a trusted individual and entices someone to click a malicious link, download a corrupted file that could in turn give the attacker access to sensitive information or account details and credentials. Malware is the second biggest threat to these companies because it is able to provide backdoor access to data about employees and customers putting both at risk. Ransomware is one of the more common attacks hitting thousands of businesses every year. Ransomware involves encrypting data company data so that it cannot be used or accessed and then in turn forcing the company to pay a ransom for said hacker to unlock the files. Small passwords have been very common. An average of 19% of enterprise professionals use easily guessed passwords or share passwords across accounts. An insider threat is a risk to a organization that is caused by the actions of employee, former employees, business contractors or associates. They can either use these methods out of greed to affect said business or out of pure ignorance and carelessness.
Cyber-attacks that currently affect Canada are phishing, Ransomware, Distributed denial of service attacks, zero day attacks, and bot net attacks. A DDoS attack is where a cyber criminal will flood a network with so much malicious traffic that it cannot operate or communicate as it normally would. Zero-day attacks happen when a hacker exploits a software vulnerability before the vendor becomes aware of it. Finally Botnet attacks are a large scale cyber attack carried out by malware infected devices, which are controlled remotely. These attacks turn compromised devices into what are known as “zombie bots” for a botnet controller. All together most country face almost the same attacks but some are experiencing very different attacks more than others.
