Exploring Culture

In Span 101 we explored the culture by watching different videos on how individuals celebrated holidays in their country. This video was called 12 Meses 12 Fiestas en España. Each calendar month there was a festivity that the Spanish speaking community participated in. Watching the videos helped me gain knowledge in what kinds of holidays that were celebrated in Spanish speaking countries. The holiday that was most intriguing to me was Carnival of Cádiz.

Engaging in Communities

It is very important to engage with my classmates to help build our Spanish speaking abilities

Interpersonal Communication

A big portion of this course involved communicating, I was paired with a partner and we remained partners the entire semester. Practicing our communication skills through zoom really gave us the confidence to go outside of the class to hold conversations. That was a big plus with the conversations.

With each conversation, I felt myself becoming stronger in speaking Spanish. The recorded conversations allowed us to make room for error and give each other feedback on what to change next time we had another conversation. Some of the prompts were trickier than the others and it really required us to challenge ourselves. If I could change one thing for next semester, I would meet with my partner maybe 2x to outline the conversation and then the next day we would record, so it gave us time to practice what we were gonna say. I enjoyed seeing my partner evolve in his Spanish speaking abilities.

Presentational Speaking

In Span 101 we participated with out community through blackboards Discussion Board

I think what challenged me the most about the DB’s is making sure my post was engaging enough and making sure I responded to my classmates to keep the conversation going. Also, Some discussion boards required us to speak in Spanish and I felt it was doable but reading the comments could be a bit hard to do.

Presentational Writing

During this semester I had to submit a few projects that involved me writing letters and schedules in all Spanish, no English was allowed to be used.

I have grown in numerous ways with me being able to take the vocabulary I have learned in the course and being have to bring it all together to write full documents. I can tell the difference from my first writing document compared to my latest document.

Interpretive Listening

In this course I used Interpretive listening to complete numerous assignments like, quizzes, oral exams and even videos on the homework site.

During interpretive listening I was able to be part of conversations with my partner, professor and I was even able to listen to conversations outside of class. When I would hear background conversations I felt like I was able to use what I was learning in class and use it in the real world. It was an amazing feeling to be able to start to understand a foreign language.
