For each section, I have embedded portions of my assignments and activities as artifacts to substantiate my reflection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exploring Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LingroLearning and TalkAbroad programs have provided me with insight into cultural perspectives.&nbsp; The projects regarding gender roles in the workforce had a particular effect on my understanding of gender stereotypes.&nbsp; As it turns out, equal access to education is the prime mover in undergoing a gender role transformation in the workforce.&nbsp; For this reason, my organization holds various community outreach events for employees and community members to interact and build relationships.&nbsp; One effective way of serving the community is through various outreach activities and fundraising.&nbsp; By becoming an active member of my local church, I am able to provide financial support to various programs in my local community.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saint-leo.org\/Works-of-Mercy\/Parish-to-the-Community\">Here<\/a> is a link to the parish website listing the community programs supported by the parish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interpersonal Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TalkAbroad program allows students studying a language to participate in a conversation with a native-speaking partner.&nbsp; The exercise promotes preparation, time management, technical skills, and interpersonal oral communication.&nbsp; In some instances problem solving may be invoked if a particular thought is difficult to convey orally, pictures, hand gestures, and objects are all tools that could be invoked to convey a thought or message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the TalkAbroad assignments, specific subject criteria were provided.\u00a0 The first conversation subject was family.\u00a0 Students and conversation partners alike were able to prepare content for the conversation beforehand.\u00a0 However, with the goal of this assignment being a fluent conversation, outside resources were not permitted.\u00a0 So as the conversation evolved in an unplanned manner, off-the-cuff responses were required.\u00a0 For me, the biggest challenge is responding to questions that I was not prepared to answer.\u00a0 This forced me to apply the vocabulary learned throughout the semester in a way that I had to perform conjugations quickly and without much thought to keep the conversation fluent.\u00a0 I think I excelled at vocabulary memorization.\u00a0 As mentioned throughout this site, I travel frequently and I\u2019ve found airplanes are very conducive to memorizing vocabulary.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Z3-E0XqDBul2bNQBYFDadnqD1jdm2JaJ\/view?usp=sharing\">Here<\/a> is an audio file from my first TalkAbroad conversation to demonstrate the skills mentioned above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presentational Speaking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Module 6 content required students to prepare a presentation about our families.&nbsp; The goal of the exercise was to apply the vocabulary learned in the module and get to know a little about our classmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The first presentation assignment, linked <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1wuxS3Y66aQXtbudi0g_Brw0Nw8hDchep\/view?usp=sharing\">here<\/a>, was difficult for me in that I was nervous about recording myself for people to view.\u00a0 However, as the semester progressed and more assignments requiring recorded presentations and live conversations were performed, I began to feel more confident each time I got in front of the camera. The method I used to prepare for these assignments was to practice a conversation beforehand with my wife or by simply recording myself and then reviewing the recording so I could discover my mistakes and correct them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presentational Writing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the semester, students were required to create projects demonstrating their creativity to convey information.&nbsp; I chose to use infographics and the tools available on Canvas for these assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first infographic I created was targeted toward people who find themselves bored during the winter months.&nbsp; The project details the health benefits of skiing as an outdoor activity in the winter. The infographic goes on to illustrate the locations of large ski resorts around the ODU region and neighboring states.&nbsp; As a winter activity, I am passionate about, it was hard for me to convey all the information I wanted because my Spanish vocabulary was so limited.&nbsp; However, I find that as my vocabulary evolved, conveying more complex information has become easier. Tools used: Canvas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interpretive Listening<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LingroLearning had various exercises which contained interpretive listening.&nbsp; For example, Module 10, Texto assignment required students to listen to audio files and then apply the interpretation to questions within the applicar.&nbsp; Students learned how the connection between their studies and career permits a flexible future.  The audio recording was talking about the link between studies and career professions.  Three questions were proposed in the recording.  First, the narrator asks what was studied in college, then he asks what job you have, and finally, what are you working on right now.  The recording then discusses various people and their careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, the audio recordings were sometimes difficult and I had to listen multiple times.&nbsp; I believe this was because I was not able to interpret body language while listening to the audio recordings in LingroLearning.&nbsp; After listening to a recording a second time I noticed my interpretive skills greatly improved.&nbsp; Below is a screenshot of Module 10 and my score, illustrating that my interpretative listening skills greatly improved over the semester since I was able to receive full points on the first attempt of the assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/span25466\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27465\/2022\/04\/Capture-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"323\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/span25466\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27465\/2022\/04\/Capture-1-1024x323.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/span25466\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27465\/2022\/04\/Capture-1-1024x323.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/span25466\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27465\/2022\/04\/Capture-1-300x95.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/span25466\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27465\/2022\/04\/Capture-1-768x242.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/span25466\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27465\/2022\/04\/Capture-1-1536x485.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/span25466\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27465\/2022\/04\/Capture-1-600x189.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/span25466\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27465\/2022\/04\/Capture-1.jpg 1918w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption> LingroLearning, Module 10: Texto Screenshot <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interpretive Reading<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of Spanish 102 is actually taught in Spanish.\u00a0 Interpretive reading was a key aspect of all the course\u2019s modules.\u00a0 From class announcements to LingroLeanring to quizzes, the interpretation of Spanish was required.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, the quantity of Spanish text the course exposes may seem overwhelming.&nbsp; This was my opinion as I was a transfer student who took Beginning Spanish One several years prior to my second course in the sequence.&nbsp; However, as I used the tools available to me in LingroLeanring, I was able to review previously learned content while expanding my vocabulary for this course.&nbsp; Many of the assignments required students to read descriptions of topics in Spanish and then apply their interpretation in the applicar portion of the assignment.&nbsp; Below is a screenshot of Module 9 depicting infographics relating to health and well-being.&nbsp; Students were required to read the infographics and then apply their interpretation skills in the applicar.&nbsp; A second artifact is included illustrating my improvement in interpretative reading since I was able to receive full points on the first attempt of the assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing how I struggled at the beginning of the course, I should have reviewed my earlier Spanish One material prior to registering for the second course.  Had I refreshed the material sooner, I would have had more time and energy to spend mastering the material of the second course and I believe this would have made the workload of the semester more balanced.
