The NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements are the result of collaboration between the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) guide:
- Language learners to identify and set learning goals and chart their progress towards language and intercultural proficiency;
- Educators to write communication learning targets for curriculum, unit and lesson plans;
- Stakeholders to clarify how well learners at different stages can communicate.
This is a self evaluation of your progress/proficiency. Next to each sentence provided, insert/place checkmark symbol to indicate what best describes your proficiency of that statement: “This is my goal”, “I can do this with help”, I can do this consistently”, “I have provided evidence to demonstrate this”. Proficiency levels may vary from one sentence to another. Each semester you will adjust the checkmarks to indicate your progress.
In order to complete these evaluations, you will need to download each of the PDFs included and edit in a PDF editing program, such as Adobe Acrobat. Each semester, you will update this page by embedding your updated PDF (removing older versions as your progress).
A tutorial on how to embed a PDF is available at this link.

- As of now, I struggle a lot with sentence structure, spelling, and remembering words, but my goal is to improve on these as I progress to Spanish 102.
- Although weirdly I can consistently pronounce words correctly or take little effort to remember how they’re pronounced.
- I struggle with talking and forming sentences quickly, I tend to need a little mental preparation before I know what to say.
- I can effectively communicate with my peers to complete assignments such as group projects and in-class assignments.

– Throughout the semester I still continue to struggle with sentence structure and remembering what words mean. But as I have progressed through this semester there have been notable improvements.

- I am also good at taking constructive criticism and opinions. I’ll often seek a second opinion on work so I know if it is presentable or not. Then from there, I can improve my work to have a better more presentable final product.
