SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Artifacts

This assignment was a bit hard for me, though it helped me organize and use my regular weekly schedule by translating it in Spanish. I used this assignment because I’m using it as a learning mechanism, more so a reflection of what I did wrong and what I could’ve done better, to prefect this assignment.

For starters my assignment is unfinished and not through. Yes, I included the main things I do during that following day. But for the remaining hours of the day, I failed to include the rest of the things I do during my day.

Instructions

Exploring Culture

Enrolling in the class I only looked at it as a requirement course, but now I view it as a new learning mechanism that can help me in the future. Having the ability and willingness to learn a second language can be very beneficial. In the beginning the work was kind of like a refresher for me because I have a little Spanish knowledge from high school. But as the semester progressed the assignments and modules were a bit more challenging, but I appreciated my professor for making them challenging. The harder modules pushed me to actually try instead of finding the easy way out, meaning look everything up online. However, I do still struggle with a few things, in terms of having face-to face conversations. I know what I want to say, and I understand the questions, my mind just goes blank, and I completely forget everything, but overtime i have worked on my confidence.

Reflection:

If I had to grade myself for the entire semester, I would give myself a low C. I will admit there were time I couldn’t figure out something and I used my Spanish Dictionary to look up the answer, but there were also times I tried to do it from memory. Because as my professor stated in the real world when you are having a conversation with someone, you will not have those resources available. However, this semester I can definitely say I learned a lot, more than I learned in high school. Every unit was so in depth and specific, it wasn’t possible to a single piece of information, because if you missed it then you wouldn’t excel in the assignment. Enduring this challenging course, it really opened my eyes, because speaking Spanish can be different forms speaking Spanish in a household. When you are learning the language of Spanish in school you are taught to use conjugations and certain punctuation, or it won’t make sense.

Interpersonal Communication

Modes of Communication involve reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Modes of Communication consists of three categories that focused on different forms of communication. Three are exactly three modes of communication. Starting with the Interpersonal mode, which is two-way communication. Meaning two individuals have a conversation, where each exchanges information, negotiates the meaning, and by answering each other’s questions. The next mode of communication is the Interpretive mode, and it consists of just one form of communication. This type of communication mainly focuses on how individuals analyze and interpret the information they receive or comprehend based on what they see, hear, or read. The last model of communication is the presentational mode, which is also a one-way communication form. In this mode individuals present, explain, inform, and formulate their understanding of information about the language’s culture and aspects.

Reflection:

For each discussion board post I have done this semester it was a requirement for myself to post my opinion about the topic, then reply to one or two fellow classmates. I’m not the biggest fan of discussion board, mainly in terms of replying, but I have actually grown to like them a bit more. Only because reading other classmates post have helped me looked at things from a different perspective. Participating in the discussion boards have strengthen my ability to understand what Spanish is, how the language is to be spoken and how to write in Spanish. If I could go back and reduce each post, I would have replied to more classmates.

Presentational Speaking

In terms of presentational speaking a few assignments this semester required us to individually submit videos of us speaking in Spanish or group projects of us have a full conversation in Spanish. The conversation assignments that required a partner were very helpful. It helped me gain more confidence in terms of speaking and have a conversation in Spanish with someone. Another assignment that helped me get of my fear and nervousness was the audio assignments, where we posted an induvial video of us pronouncing vowels and consonants

Audio Assignment:

Pronunciation of the Alphabet

Reflection: This assignment actually wasn’t challenging, though it took me a few days to remember the pronunciation of the letters. I did struggle pronouncing a few letters, but overall, I think I excelled pretty well for this assignment.

Proyecto 2

This project was a conversation between me and my group member. Each of us introduced ourselves and reciprocated off of each question.

Reflection: I wish I would’ve prepared better for this assignment. I rushed through the assignment without taking time to actually practice what I was going to ask my partner. If I could go back and reduce this assignment I would definitely prepare better and complete the assignment in an earlier time frame.
