Exploring Culture
One Thing that really helped me this semester in Spanish class 201 was reading my sentences back to me in English and overall translating what i read or wrote into English to make sure what i want to say comes out and is very clear before submitting!
Somethings that really challenged me this semester was writing full essays in Spanish. A lot of times i understand the bigger words or the big phrases but even sometimes the smallest words i might not remember. Also conjugating verbs was very challenging. When writing the historical event and having to do the analyzing after it was very challenging to put together all of my ideas in complete sentences and everything conjugated correctly. What really helped me was reading the sentences back to me in English to make sure they made as much sense as possible.
Engaging in Communities
I think it is very important to engage in communities to become socially aware. Being an education major it is very important that i am able to connect and understand as many of my students as physically possible so being knowledgably about countries and communities can definitely assist me in being as receptive as possible.
In our project about Finita we had to really get a good understanding of culture in Latin America and why someone would need to emigrate and not be able to live in the place they call home. We even went over governments and possible scenarios relating to emigration. This project made a lot of sense to me and really let me explore different peoples scenarios I never would have before.
Spanish-Google-DocsInterpersonal Communication
This semester I had done a online video call with someone from Latin America where we had a whole conversation in Spanish for 15 minutes. For the first time we had this conversation we talked about clothes and ecosystems and the second conversation we talked about art and history.
With my conversations this semester in Spanish i think i struggled trying to get my ideas out fluently and as confidentially as possible. I had to sit down and kind of think of key points that i wanted to talk about and hit that could keep my brain on track and help my thoughts come out properly. One big thing i had to do was make a list of things that i knew a lot about and touch on those through each conversation or study key concepts that i could verbally say back when needed.
Presentational Speaking
In the middle of the semester and at the end for the final we had our oral exam. The oral exam goes over concepts that we know in class and things that we should be able to talk about in Spanish.
What really challenged me was making sure i didn’t get too nervous and i could say what i had planned and studied. A lot of the time i would go home and study get to the exam and be anxious and forget everything i had just worked on. I knew how to pronounce everything and i understood major details but it was almost as if i would study wrong or not get full info needed for the test.
Presentational Writing
Another assignment that we had did this semester was the writing of an historical event. We had to pick a event and write about it in our own words, including the major details and facts about the story,
Untitled-document-Google-DocsThe hardest part of this assignment was making all the reading as cohesive as possible. I wanted to make sure i was getting the main points across from each story but making sure that i was also using the vocab from each unit and making it all sound cohesive. I think i did a good job at summarizing the story but could work on fine tuning my grammar and conjugations.
Interpretive Listening
In lingro for our homework we would have to do listening activities where we would listen to the activity and pick a choice or answer based off of what we heard, challenging our listening comprehension.
Some of the major things we would listen to in our homework’s were the sounding of vowels and how they sound when you put them in a sentence or when you use them how they should sound. We also would have pictures and the narrator would say what is happening in the picture and you would have to match up what’s happening to what the narrators said in the recording. These really tested our listening skills and made us listen for key sounds or words that we might recognize.
Interpretive Reading
One story I read this semester for this class was “La Sirena Del Bosque” This was a historical event that happened in Peru that i wrote about for my project.
What challenged me most was understanding what were big ideas that i absolutely needed to fit into my story and what really didn’t need to be added. I also needed to make sure i knew what was happening in the story before i could try to summarize it, so i spent a lot of time re-reading the story to make sure i understood the gist of what i needed in my project. I think i did a great job on getting the major points across and also delivering a engaging and interesting paper.
