SPAN 407

This course focused on the analysis of vocabulary, grammar, and cultural nuances in syntax to examine how language reflects the lifestyle and beliefs of its speakers. Our class was designed to improve our grammatical skills and knowledge of the Spanish language through translation. In class, we explored different characteristics and components present in the texts before translating from English to Spanish or vice versa. The process of translation is very complex because it is not solely about grammatical rules and vocabulary, it is also important to consider the context and the audience receiving the information.

Homework Assignments

Every class, we were assigned homework assignments practicing different grammatical rules and syntax. Concepts based on translation and narrative were also reviewed in these assignments. See the examples below:

Translation assignments

We had to complete 3 translation assignments of different texts throughout the semester. We had to provide an explanation of our corrections and observations of the grammatical errors and contextual errors in the presented texts. We also had to construct a better version of the original translation to show changes in the errors that we found while examining the texts. Translation concepts that were discussed in class reflected our comments.

Video Presentation

A 10-minute presentation about the use of subjunctive in Spanish. This is a reflection of the grammatical rules that we learned and discussed in class.
