The Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers played a tough Metropolitan Division rivalry game on Saturday, March 8th, at PPG Paints Arena. The Penguins lost 4–3 in a shootout. There were a lot of momentum changes in the game, as both sides scored goals throughout the night. The Flyers won the shootout.

The Penguins got off to a great start as Tommy Novak scored early in the first period, giving them a quick 1–0 lead and getting the home crowd excited. But the lead didn’t last long. In less than a minute, Owen Tippett scored for Philadelphia, tying the game and setting the stage for what would be a back-and-forth battle.

Rickard Rakell scored early in the second period to give the Penguins the lead again. The score was now 2–1 for Pittsburgh. Rakell played a big part in Pittsburgh’s offense and had a great game all night. But the Flyers came back once more. Alex Bump scored to make it 2–2, putting more pressure on the Penguins.

Pittsburgh kept attacking, and Erik Karlsson had a key moment when he scored with a hard slap shot that put the Penguins ahead 3–2 later in the second period. The score brought the crowd back to life and seemed like it may give Pittsburgh the upper hand.

Even so, Philadelphia wouldn’t go away. Denver Barkey scored to tie the game at 3–3, and neither team was able to break the tie for the rest of the game. Both teams had chances in the third period and overtime, but good defense and goalkeeping kept the score the same.

The game went to a shootout, where Trevor Zegras scored the sole goal, giving the Flyers the win. Dan Vladar, the goalie for Philadelphia, made a lot of important saves and saved all of Pittsburgh’s shots in the shootout to win the game.

Even though the Penguins lost, they fought hard the whole game and got a point by forcing overtime. Pittsburgh will try to build on this effort and transform close games like this into wins as the season goes on.
