Exploring Culture
The best practice you can adopt to explore a new culture is to go in with an open mind and experience it in any form you can. “Culture” comprises many aspects, some of which are easily shared and experienced. Sometimes they can be as simple as a song or new food, taking into account the importance of the simple cultural significance of simple things.
Engaging in Communities
The lines between immediate communities and the global community are blurring more and more every day as more and more people have access to travel, high speed internet and social media which connects us in new ways. We should take advantage of this new interconnectedness to engage in and learn from new communities both immediate and global.
Interpersonal Communication
During our first TalkAbroad interview I had the chance to introduce myself to my conversation partner and we got to know some basic information about each other. We also shared a little about your family and friends.
Presentational Speaking
In class, we had to create a brief video presentation detailing a food we enjoy and its recipe. We had to include things like the name and type of dish, reason why we like or made it, ingredients and basic preparation steps ,when we ate it, where, with whom, etc.
Presentational Writing
For our unit nine project we had to create an infographic advocating for an aspect of mental or physical well-being. Including a title, a brief but catchy introduction, description or symptoms or causes or consequences, local resources where students can ask for help, and other important things.
Interpretive Listening
I have used music and video recipes as a source of interpretive listening practice. The catchy and rhythmic nature of music will cause anyone to learn pronunciation and memorize words before they know it. Watching video recipes provide the same pronunciation and word memorization but with visual cues from the video as a translation aid if necessary.
Interpretive Reading
Interpretive reading can also be practiced through music and food! Reading the lyrics carefully after listening to the song can be a great way to practice recognizing the proper subjects, vocabulary, and grammar. Recipes can require you to follow exact instructions, so reading them carefully can can also be great interpretive reading practice.
