post colonial

Post colonialism is a theory that discusses life after colonization, both from the perspective of those colonized and those who did the colonizing. This critique focuses a lot of the power dynamic between characters and how that affects society, as well as how the cultures vary between those who were colonized and who did the colonizing. Most of the writings are a critique on how those who colonized left those who were colonized to live after forcing them into religions they did not want, mass murder/genocide, as well as depleted resources and a lack of a will to live. This theory tends to explore inside the mind of minorities in communities who were once affected by colonialism and how they carry on living in the society created by those who took over their land by force.

The short story “girl” by jamaica kincaid shows how colonialism can impact someone’s culture, by discussing the way that her culture has been slightly gentrified by those before her. For example, she discusses how some laundry is dried traditionally where as some are not as well as discussing culture specific food and more american food at the same time.
