My Major

I am enrolled in ODU’s nursing pre-licensure program to obtain my BSN which will open nursing opportunities that my current NR-CMA license does not. I enjoy hands-on patient care and patient education and thrive in the field of medicine. With 22 years’ experience as a medical assistant, primarily working in the same capacity as an LPN in dermatology and family practice, I have a broad range of health knowledge and have kept up to date through self-education and CEU’s. I am detail-oriented with good communication and critical thinking skills, resourcefulness, empathy, and compassion. I love helping others and working with patients, whether in-person or over the phone. I have assisted in dermal surgeries, Paps, IUD insertions/removals, and Nexplanon placement; performed skin scrapings and located scabies under the microscope; performed phlebotomy and urinalysis; given IM/ID/SC injections; tested for flu, strep, and Covid-19 (I worked through the pandemic); tested H&H, glucose, and INR’s through finger pricks; taught basic diabetes management and how to use insulin, glucometers, and CGM’s; discussed lab and imaging results with patients; prescribed and refilled medication on behalf of my physicians; managed drug reps and inventory and ordered/stocked supplies; triaged patients in-office and over the phone; ordered home health, DME’s, imaging, and lab; and taught new MA’s. I am knowledgeable about coding and health insurance, having processed authorizations for medication and imaging. I once removed at least 100 maggots from a patient’s toes…  I look forward to expanding my knowledge and skills.
