CNN Journal entry

In this video, CNN host Scott Galloway states that he would rather give his 14-year-old son a bottle of Jack Daniels and marijuana than an Instagram and a Snapchat account. This statement is an interesting way of demonstrating just how harmful social media can be to young children. I interpreted this statement as Scott Galloway implementing that he can monitor his child when they are given a bottle of Jack Daniels, however, social media is near impossible to monitor and can be more dangerous because the parent will never know what is really happening on their child’s Instagram or Snapchat. I agree with Scott Galloway’s statement that it is easier for a parent to monitor their child drinking alcohol than it is to monitor their phone. Constantly comparing yourself to others and even receiving hurtful messages through social media can be very damaging to young minds and completely diminish their self-esteem. This has been evident as self-harm and teen suicide rates have drastically increased as social media becomes more popular. Scott Galloway believes that social media should be age-gated the same way that alcohol is. Galloway states that giving children social media is the equivalent of putting nuclear weapons in their hands and that parents are going to regret giving their children social media if they do not already regret it.
