ODU’s Electronic Communications Policy.

ODU’s electronic communications policy is connected to cybersecurity in many ways. The term cybersecurity refers to the state of being protected against the criminal or unauthorized use of electronic data, and that is primarily the end goal and reasoning for the issue of ODU’s electronic communications policy. The policy was put into place to protect both students and staff from inappropriate communications and possible threats through a school-issued account. With this policy, all messages sent or received are stored within an electronic messaging system that can be accessed if there is ever a concern. Aspects of cybersecurity are seen here because if there is ever a cyber threat, someone performing illegal actions on the internet, or accusations of someone misusing the internet, someone at ODU would be able to pull up everything that the student or staff member did on their device. ODU makes it clear in the policy statement that messaging and communication services are provided by the university strictly for the purpose of enhancing productivity and maintaining effective communication between educators and their students. Throughout ODU’s electronic communications policy, users are strongly encouraged to practice proper online etiquette. Since students and staff are going to be using the university’s online services almost every day, it is important that they know right from wrong when it comes to interacting with others online. The electronic communications policy issued by Old Dominion University relates to cybersecurity because it works to protect the safety of both students and staff as they use online services provided by ODU in their day-to-day lives.
