The biological sciences, like many other fields, have been increasingly digitized. With the ease and efficiency of digitization comes the cyber-security issues facing many other industries. Bio-cyber security is a new field but a fast growing one. In the reading we see how DNA has become one of the newest cyber threats. DNA testing companies offer testing for genetic matches and genetic traits you may carry. With this research comes a new host of security issues facing individuals about the security of their own DNA. Whether its ancestry.com or 23 and me, this type of DNA testing sites create security issues that need to be addressed.
Implementing stringent cyber security protocols is essential in maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected data. In order to accomplish this, I would implement an IDS so that I will be alerted every time there is an intruder. I would need multiple firewalls such as the anti-malware software. On a regular basis I would run vulnerability scans to detect any gaps in security. I would implement more complex authentication. I would create more complex security measures such as a multilayered sign in process for all employees. I would be sure that all of my systems and networks were regularly updated with the most recent technology available.
These strategies are necessary to protect the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the lab’s data. These strategies will help accomplish near maximum security by creating barriers and alerts that would enable me to protect my systems. With these actions in place the DNA of the public will be safe and away from the wrong hands.
