The key concepts/skills that I learned from this lab were the echo, date, pwd, and ls commands. I learned that the echo command outputs any text that I put for example, I input “echo Stephen Price” and the output would be my name Stephen Price. The date command provided the current system date and time. I learned that the pwd command shows the current path of the working directory. Also, I learned that the ls command shows the contents of the current directory that I’m currently working in. I really didn’t run into any challenges in this lab. I just had to not rush through it, take my time, and learn the basics, as it’s going to help me in future labs. I say for people who haven’t used Linux before or have experience using it before to always start by learning the basics, as it’s going to help prepare you for advanced tasks.

Lab 2 – Working with Command Line

This lab was focused on working in directories and files. It was some new commands that I learned and commands that I learned from the previous lab that I had to use to show that I was able to learn the basics. I learned the cd command is used to change to another directory. I also learned that ls -l command shows all the files in the directory that are longer and more detailed. I learned that creating, renaming, copying, and deleting directories is using the commands mkdir, mv, cp, and rm. I didn’t really face any challenges with this lab but taking my time to learn the commands and what they are used for. Some takeaways from this lab are that it’s important to learn and retain the basic commands so that it builds the foundation to do more advanced system administration tasks.

Lab 3 – Working with VI editor

This lab introduced me to the VI editor in Linux. This was my first time using a text editor. I learned how to open files, edit text, and switch between insert and command mode. The main challenge that I had with this lab was saving and quitting out the Vi editor using :wq. Some takeaways from this lab is to that learning how to work in the VI editor is important, as it’s going to help me understand how system administrators edit files in Linux, which is an important skill to have when working in cybersecurity.

Lab 4 – Group and User management

This lab focused on how to create and manage user accounts and groups. I learned how to create a new user using sudo useradd and set up a password for that user account using sudo passwd. I learned how to manage groups using the commands groupadd, groupmod, and groupdel. I also learned how to check account and group information using the commands grep, id, and groups. The challenges that I faced with this lab was documenting each step after I created a new user or group. After I learn something new I tend to try to speed through things, but I had to slow down and make sure I didn’t make any errors and show the outputs. This lab showed me how important it is to assign groups and manage permissions, which it improves system security and access control.

Lab 5 – Password Cracking

This lab introduced me to John the Ripper tool and how to test and crack passwords. I learned the rockyou.txt command which runs John the Ripper in wordlist mode. I got experience with using different hash formats like MD5. The challenges that I faced with this lab is inputting the correct command so that John could crack the password easily. This lab showed me how important it is to create strong passwords. Passwords that are long that contains numbers, special characters, and symbols are important and reduce the chance of your password to get cracked.

Lab 6 – File Permissions

This lab focused on configuring file permissions and group access. I learned how to set the SGID so that group members can access files in the shared directory using the command ‘sudo chmod g+s then the directory”. I also learned how to change the group owner using the command chown. The challenges that I faced with this lab is keeping track of the users and groups permissions that I changed. This lab showed me how important permissions is to system security as it protects sensitive data. Any little changes in file permissions can cause attackers to gain unauthorized access and increase the chance of a data breach occurring.

Lab 7 – Storage Management

This lab focused on creating partitions, filesystems, and checking hard disk devices. This was my first time working with storage in Linux so it was new to me. I learned that the command fdisk -l shows the current hard disk partitions and /dev/sdn command to confirm the disk/drive has been created afer adding it. The challenge that I faced doing this lab was seeing the differences after adding a new virtual disk/drive and making sure I didn’t overwrite a partition I already created. The takeaways from this lab is that it’s important to properly manage storage as it ensures integrity, availability, and security of data. If you manage storage correctly it can lead to faster response times and data processing.

Lab 8 – Shell Script

This lab focused on writing basic shell scripts in Vi Editor. I learned the basics of writing scripts using the command chmod +x scriptname.sh and #!/bin/bash to make the script executable. The challenge that I faced doing this lab was figuring out how to fix the syntax errors when I was writing the script in Vi editor. This lab showed me that scripting is important for automating tasks. Scripting can reduce the chance of human error and enhance productivity when automating tasks.

Lab 9 – Task Automation

This lab focused on creating crontab files and automating backups using cron jobs. I learned how to schedule jobs with the command crontab -e and remove them with crontab -r. I wasn’t really faced with any challenges with this lab since it was similar to the shell script lab. This lab showed how important automating repetitive tasks is so professionals can focus on complex tasks so that they can spend more time on them to ensure it’s no errors.

Lab 10 – Networking Basics

This lab focused on subnetting and IP addresses. I have little experience working with IP addresses and binary format before, but this also focused on calculating the netmask, networking, and broadcasting addresses. The challenge that I faced was documenting the binary conversions without missing a digit. You have to be accurate when doing subnetting, as one error can mess up the whole calculation. This lab showed that networking requires you to do math and have the correct calculations, as that is important when protecting data from attackers intercepting it. Also, subnetting is important in enforcing security policies and securing systems and networks.

Lab 11 – Basic Network Configuration

This lab focused on applying subnetting to real IP ranges that require calculating subnet information. I learned from this lab how to find the difference in subnet information after changing the VM network connection. The challenge was documenting everything and making sure I highlighted the subnet information correctly when documenting it. This lab basically builds on the network basics and shows how important it is to properly configure a network so that it can reduce the risk of cyber-attacks.

Lab 1 – Install Linux VM This lab was an introduction to me since this was my first time using Linux.
