the short arm
Hans Jonas’s concept of the “short arm” of predictive knowledge highlights how limited we are in foreseeing the long-term consequences of technology. As humans, especially humans who rely on technology more and more, we must develop the habit of thinking ahead into the future. However, we shouldn’t only focus on thinking ahead into the future; it is important that we develop other traits like flexibility, constant reflection, and even outside-of-the-box thinking. Jonas emphasizes the need for a new kind of ethics—one that considers not only human interactions but also the environment and future generations. This approach calls for us to consider the broader, long-term effects of our technological decisions. As cyber threats become more sophisticated, flexibility and foresight must guide our approach. the human purpose to ensure our continued existence should be heeded and taken seriously as I feel while we can’t know the future Jonas’s ideas could be a good grasp of things we have to fear in the near future.
