As such systems grow more connected and digital, they are more vulnerable to different threats. <br \/><br \/>Vulnerabilities:  <br \/><br \/>Cybersecurity Risks: Infrastructural vital infrastructure is a hotbed of cyber attacks, like Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack in 2021. Hackers can use antiquated software and unsecured connections to compromise operations and security (U.S. Cybersecurity &amp; Infrastructure Security Agency, 2021). <br \/><br \/>Physical Risks: Infrastructures such as power stations can be attacked by hand and by natural disasters. Digital security is necessary, but physical barriers and surveillance equipment also must be put in place to guard these resources. <br \/><br \/>Connectivity and Complexity: Infrastructure is a networked system, so when one component fails, the rest can fail as well affecting public health and safety. <br \/><br \/>Old Hardware: Most equipment are run on old hardware and have not been updated in order to fight the new attacks (National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2017). <br \/><br \/>The Role of SCADA:  <br \/><br \/>In a number of ways, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems strengthen the critical infrastructure: <br \/><br \/>Monitoring In Real-Time: SCADA can provide real-time monitoring so that operators can respond to abnormalities quickly (like when you observe unusual pressure in water treatment systems). <br \/><br \/>Data Analysis: Getting deep data and analysing it will help with predictive maintenance and preventive repairs before they start happening. <br \/><br \/>Alarms: SCADA has advanced alarms to alert operators to abnormal events thereby reducing response time. <br \/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scada systemsSystems of critical infrastructure (water purification, power generation, transport) are foundational to modernity and have many weaknesses.
