Windows System Management and Security

This course provided a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to Windows Server 2019 administration, paired with real-world cybercrime case studies through the Darknet Diaries podcast series. By combining technical skill-building with threat intelligence storytelling, I gained a deep understanding of enterprise server environments, Active Directory, network services, and cybersecurity threats.

A key component of this course was MindTap, an interactive learning platform that provided guided labs and simulations. These labs were essential in developing real-world, technical skills in a virtual server environment. MindTap’s structured approach allowed for step-by-step practice in configuring and managing Windows Server systems, reinforcing both conceptual and practical knowledge.

Course Modules and Core Topics:

Module 1–3: Windows Server Setup and Virtualization

  • Installed and configured Windows Server 2019 in virtualized environments.
  • Implemented Hyper-V for rapid server deployment, demonstrating practical infrastructure setup skills.

Module 4–5: Active Directory and Resource Access

  • Gained hands-on experience managing users and groups with Active Directory.
  • Configured secure access to files, folders, and shared resources using permissions and policies.

Module 6: Printer Configuration

  • Managed enterprise-level print services across networked environments.

Module 7–8: Data Storage and Networking

  • Set up and maintained data storage systems and implemented robust networking configurations.
  • Applied DHCP, DNS, and other core network services critical to modern server operations.

Module 9–10: Remote Access and Web Services

  • Configured VPN and RADIUS for secure remote access.
  • Deployed basic web and cloud-based services, expanding hybrid infrastructure knowledge.

Module 11–12: Security and Threat Management

  • Introduced key concepts in threat detection, prevention, and cybersecurity resource utilization.
  • Emphasized system hardening and proactive response planning for server environments.

Integrated Learning: Darknet Diaries Episodes

Complementing each technical topic, the course incorporated curated Darknet Diaries episodes that brought cybersecurity threats to life:

  • NotPetya & Stuxnet – Showcased the devastating impact of state-sponsored malware on global infrastructure.
  • Shadow Brokers & Olympic Destroyer – Highlighted advanced persistent threats (APTs) and vulnerabilities in nation-state operations.
  • WannaCry & ZeuS – Illustrated ransomware and financial cybercrime tactics.
  • The LinkedIn Incident & Human Hacker – Explored social engineering and insider threats.
  • Each episode added real-world relevance and urgency to technical lessons.

Skills Developed:

  • Installation and configuration of Windows Server 2019 and Hyper-V environments.
  • Active Directory management and enterprise resource control.
  • Secure networking, remote access, and cloud-based service configuration.
  • Foundational knowledge in threat management and server security.
  • Ability to analyze real-world cyberattacks and apply lessons to system defense.
